Yurimaguas is a thriving port town in the Loreto Region of the northeastern Peruvian Amazon. Historically associated with Maynas (Pais de los Maynas), the culturally diverse town is affectionately known as the "Pearl of the Huallaga" (Perla del Huallaga). Yurimaguas is located at the confluence of the majestic Huallaga and Paranapura Rivers in the steamy rainforests of northeastern Peru. It is the capital of both Alto Amazonas Province and Yurimaguas District, and had a population estimated at about 64,000 inhabitants (2002).

Discover the authentic amazonian rainforest from Yurimaguas off the beaten tourist tracks. An alternative at Iquitos.
Together with my family we spent 5 days with Peruselva (HUAYRURO TOURS LAGUNAS) visiting the Peruvian Amazon. During this period we travelled inmmersed into the jungle way of life, including using local river transportation, eating jungle food, meeting local people and watching wildlife. José, the leader of the agencie, together with José, Emilia, Jordi and Reiner, the guides to the visit to the Pacaya Samiria reserve, were truly faboulous: caring, respectful, generous and knowleageable. They even organised a birthday party for my wife in Lagunas upon our return from Pacaya Samiria. Highly recommended for those seeking to have a direct experience of the Peruvian Amazon.

We are a litle agency in the city of Yurimaguas and we can give you a free tourist information service and show you all that the city of Yurimaguas and its surroundings has to offer. we offer you some kind of one day trip and full adventure in the Pacaya Samiria national parc. We will be your personal guide in the various excursions and day trips to make your stay more enjoyable.
Positives:
-Winston and his wife are really nice people, warm, they took good care of us, they answered all of our questions
-the park is beautiful and our guide Alberto showed us a lot of things and we managed to fish quite a lot which we enjoyed
- Alberto was cheerful, eager to talk and answer questions
Negatives:
- when we arrived at the Lagunas and we paid for the entrance to the park to the agency, they charged us too much. It costs 20 soles per day but for 7 days you get a discount and you pay only for 6 days, but they charged us for full 7 days. We found out about that from the park rangers. Once confronted Paula (the responsible woman) said that the bank charges a fee as well. Later she changed her version saying she didn't notice she paid too much at the bank and saying they cheated her. So she returned the money without admiting it was her fault or apologizing
- the trip was supposed to be 5 days in and 3 days out so 8 in total, it was totally different Alberto had other idea in mind, as a result we didn't go as deep as promised although we had fun
- when coming early back to Lagunas Alberto was supposed to take us to see dolphins, we came back earlier and he said it was too late
- when back in Lagunas Alberto was supposed to come by to tell us when would he or someone else pick us up to take a boat early in the morning and what time, he never came. We had to search for a taxi on our own at 3.30 in the morning.
Sadly we wouldn't recommend the agency even though Winston is so nice. In final end you don't go with him...

Yurimaguas definitely has it’s charme.. especially as the last city connected to the street. The atmosphere is relaxed and people are friendly. Definitely recommended to travel to Iquitos onboard on one of the cargo boats from the company Eduardo in hammock. Around the plaza or at the port you can find good hammocks for different budgets with different lifetimes. Would travel again by cargo boat.

Cumpanama and the Petroglyphs of Balsapuerto Among the petroglyphs of particular importance is the "sacred stone" of Shawi. Of enormous size, according to the local populations that would be recorded in its entirety by the same Cumpana, the creator God. Publishing is a journey of discovery of unknown codes, for which grammar can not be said to be truly integral. Still, retrieving and searching for understanding the many inscriptions carved into boulders by different sizes can be a way to find new paths for our future by looking at the past and embracing knowledge and intercultural.
