This is not a review about Playa Socos. I just could not find where to put the best in Tongoy, it falls under restaurant. At the Caleta de Pescadores, entrance on the right, the "raw bar"(oysters and scallops) taken out of the fish tanks, alive and cut open in front of you (7 scallops for 1000 pesos and 4 Oysters for 1000!!!!) the best MEAL YOU CAN HAVE IN TONGOY, RIVALLING ANY RAW BAR IN THE WORLD. TRY IT!!

Chile's beautiful long coastline is burdened by extremely-cold ocean currents (which extend all the way to the equator, and can be felt in some locations around the Galapagos islands). Tongoy is one of the few places where a sheltered bay allows the cold sea water to warm a bit (but not much). On a hot weekend in the Chilean summer, Tongoy is packed beyond comfort. We knew that when we planned our tour, and did not intend to spend any time at the Beaches. However, we were given bad information about finding a good restaurant for lunch at Tongoy. It was horribly crowded, and by the time we found a parking place, we ate a mediocre lunch (with slow service) at the place where were able to put our car. The only positive thing I can say about Tongoy is that it has a reasonably-good petrol station.

The San Pedro valley where the Pichasca National Monument is, is where they found trees of 70 million years old, dinosaur and megafauna fossils, and an ancient cave where people lived up to 10000 years ago. Unfortunately, all the good bits are gone - you can find a lot of the items they found here in La Serena's excellent but small Archaeology Museum. There are a few chunks of petrified trees left, including a broken trunk about 2 or 3 meters long of a very old Monkey Puzzle tree, but not much else to fire the imagination. Information boards are all in Spanish, and there are no guides here to help tell the story. In fact, we arrived at 8.30 am when the attraction was supposed to open, and the guard did not bother to turn up until we called him on the cell number he had left on the door - we had to wait an hour! Although this is typical behavior in South America, and particularly in Chile, it detracted from our visit somewhat. However, seeing the cave was interesting, but it is now roped off due to rockfalls. Do not expect to get much out of this visit - unless you are a geologist or a Spanish speaker. It is far to drive, and public buses are irregular with a 5 km walk from the bus stop. Walking around the whole thing should take the able-bodied between 1 and 2 hours. Maybe the new visitor center they seem to be building will make this a better attraction, but with all that money they are spending on it, maybe they should hire a guard who is more reliable, and provide some better information...a missed opportunity.

As the title says, if you are in Coquimbo or Tongoy, is a must to go to Guanaqueros, is such an enjoyable place, specially to go with some friends or family, the zone is pretty quiet and you will find only kind people willing to help you. There are a lot of campings, restaurants, liquor stores, etc... Seafood there is delicious.
Something important, the water of the beach is so warm and quiet.
PLEASE GO!
