Basilique Saint-Hubert

Reviewed By Nursej9c

I loved this church! It is very unusual, no 2 columns are the same. It is built from multicoloured stone, a complete mish mash but somehow it has formed something beautiful. I also like that this is probably the only dog friendly church I have come across although only one one day - 3rd November on St Hubert's feast day - when they bless the hunting dogs. We met an amazing guide there who was so enthusiastic about the church and told us the story of St Hubert. He made our visit complete. You can visit the tower, the bells and the roof for an additional 2 euros. This is definitely a church to visit if you are in the area.

Musees du Fourneau Saint-Michel

Located 8km from Saint-Hubert towards Nassogne, this open-air museum includes 50 traditional local buildings re-erected on a 250-acre site, including a school, a chapel, thatched cottages, tobacco-drying sheds, a public wash-house, farmhouses, artisans' houses and the following restaurants for visitors.

It seems that this open air museum is a work in progress. There are a number of areas, each based on a region of Belgium, some complete, and some not. Of those complete, some buildings were shut, and some were in the process of being refurbished.
It's all very interesting, but to be honest, I have to say that when you have seen one 19th century rural farmhouse, you've pretty much seen them all! There werre the odd distractions, such as the church (shut) and the school house (open, but a glass partition separated the visitor from the action) there were just a lot of rural houses.
Having said that, it was a pleasant way to while away a couple of hours, with the bonus of a children's play area and picnic site towards the end of the route, to keep the children happy, and a bar, to keep me happy.
Unlike some of the open airs museums elsewhere in Europe, such as the Netherlands or Denmark, there were no interactive activities to keep the children entertained, and not such a variety of buildings. The saw mill section, for example, was all shut.

Parc a Gibier

Viewing the ratings of this attraction, are expectations were modest from the start but subsequently surpassed. Don't visit this park for its spectacular wildlife - it's pretty much limited to deer and boar. But the walk in the forest & scenery in combination with the wildlife make the visit worthwhile. There are 2 trails - a blue one of around 30 minutes and a yellow one of 1-1.5 hours. The trails are well signposted. Take the yellow trail if you have the time, since the blue one is a bit short, and covered anyway by the yellow one.

La Grande Foret de Saint-Hubert

Reviewed By Paul S - Brussels, Belgium

St Hubert is located in a large wooded area (on a Belgian scale), there are many walking tours you can do on your own, they are well marked with colored symbols and described on a map you can buy (€8) in the Tourist Office in front of the Cathedral. We made a tour on a cold December day and enjoyed every minute of it! Hiking shoes are not a must but are useful because the terrain is not flat and some areas tend to get soaked after rainfall.
There are also separate tracks for mountain bikes and horses.

Great little bar to discover the local life. The staff is friendly and they have local sausages to match with a large choice of beers. Prices are average.
