The Duke of Morny actively participated in the founding of this seaside resort in the mid-19th century and was responsible for building the racecourse. At the time, the racecourse was both the stadium and the casino, and a resort without horse racing was inconceivable. Every summer in August, today as it was yesterday when the "High Society" met there. It is also the unique opportunity to see thoroughbreds frolicking on the beach on Deauville beach in the early morning and in the evenings, as the training center of Deauville. While we were there it is a very quiet place - no racing for a few weeks.

We walked on the boardwalk today at the beach and found it most relaxing. I can only imagine what it must be like in summer and I'm glad for that that I experienced it in off-season. It is nice to see you at the beach with a few people and to be able to experience such beauty in the city.

We were there during the British Days early July. This racing event includes galop races, but also some kind of steeple chase racing (do not remember the exact name) which we had never seen. The entire event is a nice experience, especially if you have never seen life horse races (and betting) before.
During those days there were also some activities for children like pony rides, a "jumping castle", pick-nick possibilities, etc..
Also the betting is fun. You can start bets at 2 euros per race and this is a good way to learn terminologie, etc...
All by all good fun for a day of entertainment.

Boganville, grockel, tattoo wearing, slot machine junkie heaven missing any sense of 007 glamour. Smelly, dirty, passé, and run down. I was 'suggested' to wear a jacket but I've no idea why. Most of the guests wouldn't have even owned a jacket. I ran from there like I'd run from chlorine gas.

Located on the Place Morny, which is at the crossroads of the 8 axes that structure the urban plan of Deauville designed by the Parisian architect Desle-François Breney, is the market in Deauville. This is a lively market that is surrounded by a large concentration of shops and cafes and is a tradition since 1881. The Fountain has been there since 1896, although it was replaced after the Second World War by a more modern version. This place hums with life and is very reachable by Parisians on the weekend when we were there. The market is housed under beautiful half-timbered roof structures, tents, and open air tables at the Place du Marché on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday mornings all year around. We were there on a Saturday. It’s a real traditional market, full of colors and nice smells under 2 pavilions. Walk around and sample the excellent products, many of which from local producers. The food is FRESH and tempting: the seafood, poultry, cheeses, fruits, vegetables, spices, honey, olives, cured ham, Norman foie gras … Go local and eat fresh!

While we were driving around Deauville we came upone the Villa Strassburger. This villa was built by the Caen architect Georges Pichereau for Baron Henri de Rothschild in 1907. As a horse racing enthusiast, the Baron preferred a site close to the racecourse rather than the sea. This property has links to Gustave Flaubert, who we experienced in Rouen at the hotel. The “Ferme du Coteau”, was bought by the novelist Gustave Flaubert’s family in 1837. Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880) inherited the property on the death of his mother in 1872 and resold it in 1875. Its facades and its roof are inscribed in the historical monuments by decree of October 29, 1975. It is called Strassburger because, the villa was bought in 1924 by the deauvillaise resident American billionaire Ralph Beaver Strassburger, who bequeathed it to Deauville by his son in 1980. This villa looks very impressive from the outside. Unfortunately it was not open when we were there (open on Wed and Thurs afternoons), but hopefully we'll get to go inside on our next visit.
