Karaikudi is a Greater municipality in Sivaganga district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is part of the area commonly referred to as "Chettinad" and has been declared a heritage town by the Government of Tamil Nadu, on account of the palatial houses built with limestone called karai veedu.

Massive Ganesha which is defined as the as the largest rock cut figurine (Kuda varai Koil in Tamil) adjoining a hillock all around. Very define place kept very clean (though under Govt Dept of HR&CE) through active participation of Nagarathar or Chettiar Trust called PKNK Trust.

Koppudaiyamman Temple is clearly a "Centre" of attraction as all business roads in four directions (all one way roads) of this town surrounds the temple and its tank. The East is for Jewellery shops mainly, West for Vegetable market and bakeries, South for grocery & antiques and west for fruits and flowers..The temple is maintained under HR&CE of TN Govt, but run by Chettiar Trustees..The festival time (Thaer or car Festival, the only time that the Deity moves out of town to nearby Kaattaamman Koil is now) April 29 to May 10 this year

The temple got recently nonsegregated and the ruling Deity is Mariamman. Muthu comes for small pox and the higher power that cures it. The place has an ancient Shiva Temple, with Amman named Meenakshi Amman and the place was originally called Meenakshipuram area of Karaikudi. After Muthumariamman became quite famous (the myth involves tomato fruit and a little girl as the origin), the area has become Muthupattanam

One of the oldest Adheenams (Madam or Mutt) in India, with a temple tank and its central mandap which is eight sided is a rare site.. maintained by Koviloor Aadheenam for centuries now has a lot of educational institutions attached. Much famous for Tamil film song locations (Vijay, Vikram films)..
