Kuttralam or Kuttalam, Spa of South India, is a panchayat town situated at a mean elevation of 160 m (520 ft) on the Western Ghats in Tirunelveli District of Tamil Nadu, India. Many seasonal and few perennial rivers such as the Chittar River, the Manimuthar River, the Pachaiyar River and the Thamirabarani River originate in this region. The numerous waterfalls and cascades along with the ubiquitous health resorts in the area have earned it the title the Spa of South India. The falls carry a good amount of water only when there is a rain on the hills. The season begins from June of every year till September. The South West Monsoon brings in the cold breeze with mild temperature. From October to December North East Monsoon sets over in Tamil Nadu and the climate is cold and the rains are very heavy sometimes. Sometimes the falls get flooded and people are not allowed to take bath during floods.

Thiru Kutraalanaathar Swamy Temple is close to the Main Falls at Kutraallam, easily accessed by road & auto. The simple Gopuram at the entrance leaves the Devotee to feel amazed by the awesome Grandeur of the Vast Interior. Hundreds of intricately carved Stone Pillars support the Enormous Halls & Sanctum Santorum of Kutraalanaathar Swamy - Maheshwara. The adjacent large Amman Sannidhi is also Beautifully laid out. The Dharani Peedam - a Sakthi Peedam of Durgai Amman - is another Unique Holy Darshan Sannidhi. A cool hour of peace & tranquility inside this massive Temple is hugely satisfying. Clearly, a Must-Visit.

The Old falls is around 8km from the Main falls Courtallam . The way to the falls is very beautiful with forested Mountains and green blossoming rice fields to the right and coconut trees, Mango trees to the left. Two separate children pool is in front of the water falls so the falls is favourite far children.

Old Courtallam (Kuttralam as they call in Tamil) is located at a distance of about 8 Kms from the Main Courtallam falls. This place is called as "Spa of South India" as numerous Waterfalls and cascades along with a number of Health Resorts are located here and hence earned the title the Spa of South India.
Further, many seasonal and a few perennial rivers such as the Chittar River, the Manimuthar River, the Pachaiyar River and the Tambaraparani River originate in this region. The falls carry a good amount of water only when there is a rain on the hills.
Unfortunately, during our visit on 19th September 2016, there was no water and we could not any falls here. By the time of our visit, the South West Mansoon appeared to be over. it was hot too and no cool breeze was felt here. We were rather disappointed for not enjoying water falls at this place.

Temple located at base of main falls is magnificent
Large halls and peacdful
All devotees post the bath visit temple. Entry allowed only in full tracks or veshti
Temple is lined with numerous shops with knick knack, small tiffin mess etc.

Also from one place inside temple u can see the origin of main falls falling from top of the mountain. Good view

Folk Arts Site Museum is ~ 1km from Kutraalanaathar Temple, right on the same road. A small board over a small opening into a narrow passage, identifies this tiny Museum. The inside is dimly lit, but helpful Staff switch on lights as you move around. There are barely 40~50 exhibits of interest, which a casual visitor can cover in 10 mins. A discerning lover of Ancient Indian Handcraft - Stone, Wood, Clay & Metal - would find several Items, over 1000 years old, of absorbing interest. A Huge, Superbly Symmetric, Clay Burial Urn made over 2000 yrs ago, a Beautiful Stone Sculpture sculpted 1300 yrs ago, a Heavy, Smoothly Finished Wooden Grinder are a few of the awesome exhibits. A 30mins visit opens one's mind to the perfectionist zeal of ancient Indians.
