Eisenerz ("Iron ore") is a market place and old mining town in the Austrian state of Styria, 68 mi (109 km). N.W. of Graz by rail. Pop. (2001) 6,400. It is situated in the deep Erzbach Valley, dominated on the east by the Pfaffenstein 1871m, (6140 ft), on the west by the Kaiserschild 2084m (6830 ft), and on the south by the Erzberg 1465m (5030 ft). It has an interesting example of a medieval fortified church, a Gothic edifice founded by Rudolph of Habsburg in the 13th century and rebuilt in the 16th.

We had cheese ravioli, salad and Kaiserschmarrn, which were all very good. Their menu is quite extensive and looked yummy. Not a lot for vegetarians though. The waitress was super friendly and the food came unexpectedly quick. We often order Kaiserschmarrn when in Austria and it usually takes quite a long time before you get it. So this was a pleasant surprise. We'll definitely go back to the schwarze Adler.

Eisenerz is short on any decent place to dine at. The 6km trip along the newly laid tarmac road to Ramsau was worth it! in fact I and my colleagues and other friends came back time and time again frorm August till end Sept. At every visit, we were made most welcome by the owners, The menu is comprehensive enough, all the meals were very well cooked, portions á la Styrian...huge, and no efforts were spared in catering for individual requests, and variations from the menu... If you leave here hungry you've either fallen out with the owners (Lovely people) or youre a glutton!
In any case, the "Saiblingsfilet" (Trout) is to be recommended, as are all the salads, and Irene's home baked cakes.
Incidentally, the restaurant is an official mountain rescue reporting and evacuation centre. There are cosy mountain huts available for rental by groups of mountaineers, skiers.

We have been using this restaurant on our visits to Eisenerz for over 20 years. The welcome is always warm and very special. The food is traditional and very good value for money.
You can spend many happy hours admiring the view, and enjoying the meal.
Some evenings there may be traditional music, every evening a warm welcome.
The owners are changing the restaurant into a 'Pension' in the autumn and unfortunately the restaurant will close in its present form.
If you are visiting make sure to go at least once to the Latschen if you want to experience real rather than commercial friendliness.
