Beautiful completely carved in Salt Cathedral is unique in its kind and presents visitors a majesty unparalleled. 180 meters underground lies a place away from everyday life invites reflection, self-discovery and inner encounter with the spiritual part.
This is a Cathedral (technically, not exactly, a Cathedral but let's not quibble about technicalities) of salt, built in a salt mine. It's a stunning work, and without being irreverent in any way whatsoever a temple to ingenuity and capitalism. What to do with a salt mine when you extract salt and rock? Leave a tourist destination! The church, complete with the stations of the cross, is lovely. Exiting the church there are a variety of shops, 3D movie, spa, and snack shops. Our family left with a nativity scene of salt (which was later inspected and passed around in Atlanta Hartsfield). Tours are in Spanish and in English. And yes, it is really made of salt.

This beautiful church is located on the Comuneros Square in the heart of historic center.of Zipaquirá . It is the main church of the diocese. It is a distinctive 19th century church externally similar in design to some other known churches in Colombia. To finish it took over 100 years. Inside there are stately solemn columns and rather simple but pretty interior.

The Zipaquira station is worth a look and reflects Colombia's long but today sadly lacking, relationship with railway transport.
Examples of stations can be seen all over the country and as a railway buff since my childhood, I do love an old railway station.
Others nearby are in Chia, Briceño, Tocancipa, and all the way to Tunja and beyond.

Finkana (formerly Panaca Sabana) is located aprox. 1 hour north of Bogota. The access via the road from Briceno is very, very bad.
Be prepared to pay for everything:
Entering with your car, you pay a parking fee at the tollgate for being allowed to leave your car on a kind of "acre" .
Next you pay when entering the park; there are different options available.
The (minimum) standard tarif is COP 25.000 (aprox.USD 10 per person) and gives you access to "the park" which is supposed to be a thematic (agriculture) theme park. For COP 10.000 more (aprox. 4USD) you can watch up to 2 "shows".
The park is spread over a large area which is more or less well maintained.
There are several sheds with animals: cows, pigs, rabbits, chicken.... and your children can realize different activities which are all charged separately!!!
Children can milk cows and feed the milk to the pigs...
Sit in the rabbit corral; ride on a donkey, collect freshly laid eggs etc.
Every activity has its price and going there with 2-4 children easily turns into an expensive adventure for the parents.
The stuff was very little animated.
Eating options were very poor: lots of cheap fried food and the attention in the restaurant was close to zero.
Sure that we´re not coming back - there are other options (less expensive and more interesting) around Bogota.

This was always apparently a very important local church. Current building is a second on this site and was consecrated in1927. In the past this site was visited by pilgrims coming to pray at the remains of the martyrs of Zacatecas. That was until until 1982. Now the relics are in the Diocesan Cathedral.
The church of Our Lady of Sorrows is beautiful and adorned with a statue of Jesus.

This unexpected space is ideal for you to reconnect with all of your senses. We want you to experience something like you have never experience before. Get ready to explore our underground store and if you're feeling extra curious and have the time, we invite you to get a massage and get a glass of wine with a view you will never forget.
Make sure you build in time for this little treat. It is a spa and you can get massages, hang out in the salt room. Most tours will have you hurry up and you wont get to do this. If you do a private tour, one who is driving you from Bogota etc, then allow for this. You can get a lie down massage or a chair massage. For 20 minutes it's about $24 USD. While it is not going to be "the best massage of your life", you can always say you had a massage in a salt mine, 180 meters below the Earth's surface.

I love historyical places. My wife didn't really appreciate this little trip, so I went alone while she stayed at the hotel. It's a small town, not much to do here, but this is one of the places i suggest visiting if you are here.
