The historic center of Bruges has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000 thanks to its status as one of the commercial and cultural capitals of Europe and its enduring Gothic architecture. The Belgian city center is cited as a great example of a medieval historic settlement, even while it has evolved over the years.

This is really not an old castle, but one built to look like one. It cost about 20 euro from the center of town to get there by taxi and then the entrance fee on top of that.

The first floor of the museum provides an overview of the evolution of painting styles and skills from the famous Belgian painter Permeke. Several paintings and statues are exhibited. Permeke has lived in the house and some pictures reflect personal souvenirs. You can also walk outside in the park where some other statues are displayed. Jabbeke is located between Bruges and Ostend and therefore interesting if you are staying in this region.

Do you want to impress your friends or family with delicious handmade truffles? Or what about a classic chocolate bonbon, filled with irresistible hazelnut stuffing, Baileys or (salted) caramel? Why not go all the way and spice up your own stuffing with a wide range of flavourings, herbs and even Flowers! Chocolates Made By Me is the place to be!
My wife and I spent an enjoyable and informative afternoon at Chocolates Made By Me – it was great fun.
The workshops are run by Stephanie, a master chocolatier who studied the art (or should that be science?) of chocolate-making from the age of 11. We booked on the ‘chocolate romance’ for two people, but there are also group workshops available.
Ahead of the day, we were sent detailed instructions on how to get to her farm (it is in a remote location, but not far from Bruges). When we arrived Stephanie was waiting at the door for us, smiling from ear to ear – we felt at ease straight away.
After a brief introduction to chocolate, we made a chocolate heart and a selection of chocolates, including pralines and truffles. I had previously informed Stephanie that I was diabetic and she had thoughtfully found some sugar-free recipes and bought sugar-free ingredients so we ended up making double the amount of chocolates – some sugar-free and some with sugar. There were over 50 recipes with sugar for my wife to choose from. The chocolates we made tasted delicious. I even tried taking some chocolate ‘snuff’, but will stick to eating it in future!
Stephanie is a great tutor. She certainly knows her subject and is able to explain things simply and clearly. Her English is perfect.
If you like chocolate (who doesn’t?) I thoroughly recommend Chocolates Made By Me in the country that has made chocolate its own.

The Lange Max Museum is a must-see place for the World War I tourist on the German side of the western frontline. The farmyard is the centre of this curtural and touristic location. A long lane takes you from the farmyard to the remains of the artillerie platform of the former German cannon 'Lange Max'. In a brand new contemporary museum, the visitor learns all about the huge cannon that was designed to bombard Dunkirk. The German occupation of Koekelare gets full attention. A unique exhibition tells you all about the organisation behind the frontline. The production of army goods ran at full speed in Koekelare. The little bakehouse still contains traces of the German presence and is redesignated as a multi-media room. You can relax on a cosy Terrace enjoying a 'Kanonbier' or homemade pancakes.
We visited this museum on September 21st. In front of the museum is a free parking lot. There is an entrance fee with or without audio guide. When we visited there was a temporary exhibit about the consequences of the flooding (inundation) by the Belgian Army for the Germans during the Great War. Be aware that till the end of November you will not be able to visit the artillery platform where the Long Max stood.
There are 2 parts in this museum: one about the daily life of the inhabitants of Koekelare and the German occupier, and the other one about the Long Max, a big gun.

A lovely surprise finding this beautiful estate and castle. Free to walk around and a short drive or bike ride from Bruges. We were the only ones there (the castle itself was closed) and we loved it and escaping the crowds of bruges. Definitely worth a visit if you have time in the area.

This was an accidental found during our short trip to Bruges. During a beer tasting, I discovered that I really liked this beer, so we went to the brewery for a visit. You get an audio guide in a lot of languages and it's a...MoreThank you for your review! Indeed, you can do the visit at your own pace and speak to the brewer! We are so pleased that you enjoyed our beer and the Bourgogne des Flandres experience :) Come visit again soon!

The Burg Square near the Markt place is one of the most beautifull places from Bruges.
You can take a lot of photo's from the City Hall, the Church of the Holy blood, the lovely other buildings on this square, the horse drawn carriages, etc. You can set on terras or in tearoom and look to the many visiting people. A must see if you visit the old town of Bruges.
