I traveled Okajou-shi (the site of Okajou Castle) in a packaged tour . I was not expecting so much exciting as it is a place I never heard before, there might be only a stone fence as a legacy. It used be regarded as an un-defeatable military base, we have to walk up sharp slope. But the view on the top of hill was fantastic. Unfortunately, we missed cloured (red and yellow) leaves because of warmer weather than usual. There are lots of cherry trees, suggesting it would be good to come back in April.
There is not anything else inside other than statue of Rentaro Taki.
Walking to have a look at a view, with an imagination of what past castle looked like.
It is regretable not to have a public transportatin service.

Besides driving to Mt. Kuju, you can take a public bus from Beppu or Taketa. The schedule is online. The hike takes 4 hours or so, taking time for lunch and appreciating the view. It's very easy to summit the two neighboring Mountains, Mt. Naka (highest mountain in Kyushu at 1,791 meters) and Mt. Inahoshi. There is a rest stop just before the final push to summit. A lovely lake is nestled between the Mountains, I imagine it would be great to swim in during the summer time!

Spend as long time as you can once you go there. Its beautiful silky water screen is something that you won't get tired of. A little problem is that there is no public transportation to access the dam and a little difficult to reach there without detail information on the route. Better do some research on the route beforehand.

It is said that Taketa once had a large Christian population in the medieval times. Then Christianity was banned by the Tokugawa Shogunate so Taketa Christians had to dig this kind of cave chapel. The question is; why right behind a Samurai street? Samurais were those who suppressed them at that time! The mystery remains unanswered.....

In May 2017 we went to explore the township of Taketa.before going to the castle. Taketa is a pretty historic town in the southern part of Ooita Prefecture. We wished to get some background information at the local history museum, but unfortunately found that it was closed Mondays. From the museum, we turned right into the former samurai residence area of Tonomachi. Quite a few walls of former samurai residences remain, enough to give you an idea of a district where the samurais used to live.
