Spello (in Antiquity: Hispellum) is an ancient town and comune (township) of Italy, in the province of Perugia in east central Umbria, on the lower southern flank of Mt. Subasio. It is 6 km (4 mi) NNW of Foligno and 10 km (6 mi) SSE of Assisi.

We went to Spello the Saturday before Corpus Domini to see the town "pre-L'Inforiata" and it was really charming. Groups of neighbors of all ages sitting together painstakingly cutting or plucking flower petals in preparation for the night's work to create the displays on the sidewalks. People were so friendly and it was interesting to see the process. It was also great to see Spello without the MOBS that descend the next day. Seeing the displays the next day definitely made it worthwhile to navigate the crowds but you won't be able to appreciate the beauty of Spello in the frenzy of the crowds.

This small museum is thoughtfully laid out in an interesting, historic palazzo/fortress. It contains some interesting art (particularly frescoes) and gives an overview of the history of this ancient city. The section devoted to jousting is a bonus. And, certainly in October, you will have the place almost all to yourself.

Our family of three plus a friend enjoyed the Farm to Table tour with Jennifer in April 2017 and loved our experience. Jennifer was very quick to reply with information as we scheduled the tour by email and checked in again the week of. We loved the places she took us and getting the opportunity to see a side of Umbrian life we would not have been able to experience on our own. Our 13 year old son also loved the tour and said it was his favorite day of our time in Umbria. I highly recommend the tours that Jennifer offers.

Unlike the previous reviewer I had no objection at all to paying a little to be able to see inside the chapel. It was only two euros, I think. The person who opened it was friendly and informative.
The frescoes are not only absolutely gorgeous in a decorative, artistic sense, but also full of absorbing detail, meaning and human sympathy, and deserve plenty of time. If possible read something about them before you go in.
Various books are on sale next to the chapel. I bought one on Pinturicchio. I think perhaps I should also have bought one on just these frescoes.
No photographs allowed. Good.

An abbey just outside Foligno in a beautiful woodland setting. Built in XI century on the site of a previous fortified residence it became quite wealthy before 1400,but later fell into a decline. The main feature is the beautiful chiostro from 1229 with 128 columns decorated with mosiacs. Definitely worth the side trip!

THE MICROBREWERY The ethic microbrewery DieciNove is located in the historic center of Spello, a small village in the province of Perugia, at the foot of Mount Subasio. In the micro-laboratory adjacent to the tasting room are produced monthly about 18 hectoliters of beer characterized by the use of so-called "Forgotten Fruits". Given the peculiarity of our production, the company is always looking for high quality products. The raw materials used in the manufacturing process are in fact monitored and controlled before use. For malts we chose semifinished of high quality, which as well as to guarantee us a 100% traceability, allow us to devote more attention to the process of flavoring beer. The product, which do not add preservatives of any kind, is neither pasteurized nor filtered, but re-fermented in the bottle to keep the property of the raw beer.

We spent three wonderful days exploring Spello and nearby cities. While wandering the streets we arrived at this microbrewery. As a lover of all things beer (in addition to wine), had to stop in for a taste.
Young gentleman at the bar didn't speak English which was fairly prevalent across this region so if you get frustrated trying to communicate in broken Italian, English, pantomime, I would recommend you get some help.
I had no trouble ordering up a beer from their short list of two available, but was tougher trying to discuss styles and brew methods so just stood and sipped. Very light in style and body, nothing to write home about but nothing offensive either. Fun change of pace.

The have just recently restored these towers and they
are stunning. I love to go there at all times of day and watch how the light changes and the shadows move. Sunset is really pretty though. By Spring 2014 the streets should be restored as well and will bring the project to completion.

It's not one of the 'great' Italian cathedrals, but it has remarkable features. First, the huge St Peter's-style baldachin over the altar (directly under the dome), second, the pink stone on the facade (perhaps elsewhere - I didn't see), and third the pair of heraldic marble animals flanking the entrance, which are magnificent.

A somewhat bland exterior conceals a wonderful interior, full of beautiful paintings and frescoes. The Baglioni chapel is the undoubted highlight, where you can spend several minutes surrounded by Pinturicchio's world-famous frescoes. We managed to spend 25 minutes in the chapel, thanks to a steady trickle of visitors each paying their €2 for admission and lighting, and there was no pressure on us to leave. I resented the ban on photography inside the chapel, even without flash, which seemed a bit petty but will probably have helped to increase sales in the bookshop.
However, they seemed very relaxed about photography in the rest of the church, and there was plenty to keep me occupied! There were further paintings by Pinturicchio and others by some of his pupils, and the whole church was a delight.

If you go to Collepino... You should go by foot from Spello . The trail starts on the north side of spello and there is sufficient parking space. The trail brings you along the roman aqueduct in about 1h30 to collepino. We are not that much into walking but we will start to do it more after this tour. It is simply super! The best views in umbria. Along the way you also have some Fountains for water. The last part to collepino is quite steep. But the village of collepino is so nice... Time stood still there. It takes you 15 minutes to do the tour of the village but it is so authentic... Simply divine. There is a bar and a restaurant. We had one of our nices days of holidays doing this tour. Highly recommended
