We were staying in Austria but close to the border so we travelled down to Sopron from Jois and had a look around this wonderful town. The fire tower is the most dominate building in the centre mainly because of it's purpose. It was used in the past as a look out for fires starting up. You can visit go up to the top for a wonderful view. Highly recommended

The city has a modestly interesting history that dates back to and before Roman times. The guide was extremely well informed and conducted a very interesting, informative and entertaining tour. The core of the city is undergoing street repairs and the installation of underground utilities. The completed areas show a marked improvement in appearance. We highly recommend the walking tour. Then come back in the evening.

This house is a must visit for tourist visiting Sopron. It's a living museum. Not seen in many places outside Sopron.

Dear Guests! Due to technical reasons we are temporarily closed!
The mining museum is a little gem off the Old Town Square. The front desk staff did not speak English, and there was no audio guide, but many of the signs throughout the museum are also in English, so you can still learn quite a bit. The museum is relatively small, but what they do have is fantastic and presented very well. You can easily spend an hour here, learning about the history of mining in Hungary.

Spend time wandering the street of old Sopron. The streets are wide and very pedestrian friendly. Lots of cafes and eating places.
The old roman and medieval towns are full of history and could easily spend most of a day wandering the cobblestone streets, visiting the fire Tower, old churches and museums.

St Michael's church
Cosy gothic church on Sopron's main squaire. Originally built in 13th century, went through several restorations, so now baroque interior very neatly and harmoniously matches gothic and neogothic architecture: beautifull stained-glass windows, floral and grotesk figures corbels. There is info in printouts and on interactive displays about the church, its history and decor in English, German and Hungaian. Small chapal next to the church is extraordinary: medival corbels with grotesk and enimal figures representing sins on the walls and Christ and Evangelits on the ceiling are really cool. Storno's collection just on other side of the square. Tip: just opposit the church there is nice street cafe where you can buy glass of wine, punsh or cup of hot tea, which is perfect if you do sightseeing in autumn, winter or spring!

When I have visited before it was free access to the church and museum now it is a charging affair so I did not bother going in. I am sure many people like myself will be put off by the attitude of the staff who were not very pleasant

A theatre in an old quarry, who would think about building such a place.
Sopron did it ! interesting little museum about the prehistoric finds down in the quarry that build 19th century Vienna, 70 km north of Sopron.
Worth visiting, not only for the quarry but also for the summer opera and muscial festival that isbeing organised in the 750 seat theatre.

Enjoyed walking in the old town quarter of Sopron. Nice narrow streets with houses dating back to the seventeen century with gorgeous courtyards.
