The best place in Bulgaria for the fans of extreme sports! It offers a wide range of different activities in the field of paragliding, mountain biking and rock climbing. "Shambhala" annually hosts many national and international competitions in extreme sports. "Shambhala" center offers a ride on the longest lift on the Balkan Peninsula.
I've used the lift in previous visits to Sopot. I'd recommend it as an inexpensive and lazy way to spend some time outdoors. It is especially good during hot weather; not very good during cold and windy weather. If you have a camera, it would be good to take it along.

The national museum of Vasil Levski is situated in the central region of the town of Karlovo. The museum complex includes the native house of Vasil Levski, a memorial chapel "Vsyah Svetih Bolgarskih" (All Saints of Bulgaria), Chardaklieva House, a museum exposition and the monument of Gina Kuncheva - the mother of Levski. The museum is one of the most visited memorial museums in Bulgaria.
During my several business trips to Bulgaria I started to understand how important is Levsky for this country. So being in Karlovo for business we decided to visit the small museum : very nice full of pictures and original documents. Going out of the museum the English speaking guide made me gift a book with the biography of Levsky. This is also part of the genuine Bulgaria hospitality. Thank you very much!

Ivan Vazov is the author of one of Bulgaria's most significant history-oriented books "Under the yoke". A lot of information in the book is used nowadays as a historical reference and I strongly urge you to read it if you plan to live in Bulgaria. If you decide to also pay a visit to his home you'll gain in two different directions:
1. You'll get a really good understanding of what old Bulgarian houses look like;
2. If you're into writing and creativity you'll get a good understanding of how surroundings can influence a creative person.
I personally absolutely loved this house and the little time I spent there... I wish I had more time - I would have sat on a bench to breathe in the peace and beauty of Ivan Vazov's home.

The clear waters of the Stara reka river rush down crashing into stones, raging disappear into the abyss, and finally with a mad jump throw themselves into the valley. The waterfall is 15 meters high and is located only 1 km north of the city center. The stroll along Vadopad (Waterfall) street, which leads to it is especially pleasant.
The closeness of the town has made the waterfall an attraction for visitors and a favorite place for relaxation, walks and summer picnics for the residents of Karlovo region.
If you are in love, mysterious ways will get you to Suchurum. The path that leads to it has long been called "lover's lane" by the people here. Even in the late hours you can meet embracing couples. The walk to the waterfall is a romantic at any of day or night - in the day and moonlight.

The paragliding tandem flight is the easiest and most exciting way to explore the skies. No previous experience is required - just take a few easy steps with our certified instructors and let them take you on a journey in the skies above Sopot and the Central Balakan national park. If you really like it you can sing up for our beginners courses and explore the air on your own.
I recently (yesterday!) completed a six-day beginners' course in paragliding with Skynomad, and I must say it was one of the best sports vacation decisions I have ever made. They are a thoroughly professional crew that keeps safety at the forefront, while at the same time individualizing the experience for each participant, whether you are a one-time tandem passenger, taking a course with them, or simply an experienced paraglider looking for some local expertise on weather and terrain. Skynomad has been in business for 16 years now, and Ivo, Danni, Christof and Nicolai are a relaxed but highly professional group. Skynomad is not a large operation, and these guys are not in it for money. They have a passion for paragliding and they simply love introducing others to the sport. It shows.
Nicolai ("the sky shepherd") is an excellent instructor who will push you to, but never beyond, your limits, and he customizes the exercises each student pilot must perform to his/her abilities. Our beginners' group was small (three people), which means maximum individual attention and flight time, unlike many of the much larger schools in other places. By its nature, paragliding can be a bit scary at times for beginners; however, I never once doubted the guidance or competence of our instructor.
The Sopot area is a paragliding Mecca, with excellent launch and landing sites, and mostly excellent weather. I would strongly recommend Skynomad, and hope to take more courses with them again in the future.

We had a gift voucher for a tandem flight over Sopot. We were very lucky the experience was with Valery Tzvetanov (the organiser of Sky Extreme), an incredibly professional and able pilot. He was extremely responsive from the first time I got in touch, then advised on the appropriate weather for us to come to Sopot, on the day he turned up and gave us a lift from Karlovo to Sopot, spoke english to my wife, and kept excellent humour throughout.
The flight itself was awesome - the weather was a bit challenging with winds, clouds and snow on top of the mountain. Valery was in his element. Both flights were amazing, very safe and very enjoyable. I would certainly be very keen to come back in the summer!

Grandfather Stoyan's mill from Vazov's novel "Under the Yoke" is currently operating and displays the typical interior of flour mills, preserved interiors and workplace. Exterior accents are - placed logs and tables for Seating, display of old household and ethnographic elements demonstration of grinding grain, etc. For a couple of hours you'll feel like a hero from the novel, and you'll completely forget that you're living in the 21 century!

I was aware that this place cannot be compared with the "Etar" in Gabrovo but I was expecting it to offer some information on the traditional Bulgarian crafts. Also, I`ve been expecting the shop to offer nice and interesting products made by the craftsmen.
In fact, the shop is really poor in variety and there are shops for tourists that offer more products elsewhere. The Exhibitions are too small and didn`t manage to attract our attention.
There is an entry fee (2 leva) which is not much but you just don`t feel like the place worths those money. I believe it would be better if the place is free to visit and to rely on you to buy something from the shop, from the coffee shop or to pay for the retro photo that is available.
Yes - there is a retro photo. A single picture costs 2 leva which is pretty cheap but personally I don`t like those retro photos as I find them kitschy.
They offer traditional cofee there. The balkony is pretty nice and I guess you can have some good time if you like coffee.
Well, don`t get me wrong - the place is not awful. It is just not what you`d expect. If you have enough time to spend in Sopot - don`t hesitate visiting the place. But if you have to choose what to skip - this one can be skipped without feeling bad about it.
I visited Sopot and Karlovo on the same day and we didn`t manage to visit "Buhoviq han" in Karlovo. Now I`d definitely choose to go there instead of "Sopotski esnaf".
