...that is arguably even more impressive than Hongcun due to its larger size and less polished nature. What it lacks in 'sights', it makes up for in beautiful courtyards which are now guesthouses and still lived-in old residences, all incredibly ornate in decoration. Even in the sweltering heat, this place is a joy in which to get lost.

When you enter the ancient city, just behind the restored city gate it's quite depressing since everything is new and restored and nothing left authentic, but after a few minutes, when you go further inside, it's beautiful.
The old arched gate is wonderful, and the "real" ancient street Doushan street (斗山街) is left intact at its original shape and a great place to stroll and explore for an hour or two. Well worth it if you're there.

Before we visited the Shexian Tangyue Memorial Arches on 7 December 2014, we went to Xi Yuan Jing Qu. The lady tour guide enlightened us the life of an ancient rich family. The house was huge and had beautiful ancient architecture and carvings. We were told that the movie company also like to get the settings from here. The back garden was impressive. Then we moved on to Shexian Tangyue Memorial Arches. We had a lady tour guide to explain each of the seven memorial arches which the Chinese called them "Paifang". All stories were very interesting. The tickets that we bought could be used for two scenic spots, one The Shexian Tangyue Memorial Arches and the other was The Bao Family Garden. We continued our journey to The Bao Family Garden. This was a Bonsai garden. It was beautiful and peaceful. There were many flower trees, many pots of bonsai and beautiful ponds.

CHINESE CROWDS = pushing, jostling, yelling and even spitting. Gosh, the Chinese are such knaves. And get this: the Chinese tour guides use MICROPHONES & SPEAKERS and they yell into their mikes. Such boors. Chinese people.

This is the most important lake around the town and is referred to as the stomach of the village. In essence it is a small pond around which the lake is built. There have been more impressive lakes

I've been to Huangshan twice and Im always awed by how wonderful the scenery on top of the mountain. Best sunrise and sunset I've seen so far with the sea of clouds at sunrise makes me more grateful as to how blessed we truly are with what nature has to offer.
Conquering Mt. Huangshan is not for the faint-hearted. It takes a lot of strenght, stamina, endurance and bravery to be able to reach the highest peak. But the reward is truly astounding! One guy from the US even said: "This place is not real!" because climbing from one mountain to another makes you think that everything surrounding you, you only once saw in a portrait or animated film.
Mt. Huangshan is truly a peace of heaven on earth.

This is in fact a whole village, not just a dam, adjunct to Shexian's south east corner. The ancient village is beautiful and well worth visiting. It's unspoiled, almost all original buildings were preserved and walking its streets and alleys is a real treat.
Take notice that the entrance ticket is included in the ticket for Huizhou Ancient City.

So this used to be a school for many generations. It is an open air school with no windows - for protection of the women and children when the men were at war. There are two separate buildings, one for primary school and one for the kindergarten. There is a painting of Confucius where the statue used to be. The architecture itself is simple but it's nice to come and admire the 500 year old history
