La Aurora Cigar factory is a global tour around a Premium cigar factory, from seed to packaging. Our visitors obtained in less than an hour a complete view of the intricate process of making a cigar and about the history of La Aurora, the original cigar factory in Dominican Republic, opened in 1903.
An excellent factory tour and great attraction. From the cruise ship port it's a a bit of a haul, almost 90 minutes. The labor intense process of growing tobacco to making cigars is explained before entering the factory, in a video display room appointed with the tools used. Our tour leader then led us into a hall where machine made cigars are manufactured. From there we moved into a "rolling room" where a dozen "rollers" made as many different cigars. Samples were handed out, cut, lit, and enjoyed with proper lighting technique demonstrated. After about 30 minutes the tour moved into the sales store for some "souvenir" shopping. Decent prices as compared to online retailers. Education, fun, coffee, and a good cigar, what's not to like?

None of the travel guides said much about Santiago and there are few hotels in the center. We overnighted here simply as a convenience on our way to Haiti. So glad we did. This monument is truly impressive and had a lively surrounding scene on a Sunday evening.

Most locals are either empty or out of business. Only worthwhile stores are the cheap jewelry stores on ground floor. Jumbo food store is okay. Food court setup is not conducive to eating and conversing with the person accompanying you. The reason being that music is so deafening loud you would almost think you're in a disco and not in a food court.

Inspired by masonry architecture at the end of the XIXth century, this fortress is a piece of history in the today's cement universe of Santiago even if there are still some wood house. The place is open to public but be aware to be friendly because this is also the quarter of the metropolitan police and some militaries. Since 2004, there is a museum. There you will see paintings, sculptures tainos, cutlery, jewelry, rifles, handguns and coins, among other pieces that have been donated. People have made donations. In the courtyard there are ancient wars tanks that were used by the Army after World War II. There are weapons used by the Navy, Air Force and the National Army, some guns, thanks to the Armed Forces donations.

Walking down Calle El Sol, we enter the Mercado Modelo. This is a 2nd story building full of gift shops, hand made articles, souvenirs and other objects wanted by tourists visiting Santiago. It also sponsored jewell shops (gold, silver) , authentic dominican gems (amber, larimar) but also fake jewellry made of gold filled stuff and stainless steel. The shops also sell wood made items, tobbaco, clothing and other miscellaneous objects.
For those travelling to DR, who wants to have some nice dominican souvenir to bring back home at a fair price.
