So my family and I came to visit my brother-in-law's retreat center across Laguna Yarinacocha. In order to get to Tierravida Bexnote you have to fly from Lima to Pucallpa, take a moto-taxi to the Laguna and take a piky piky boat (named for the sound their little 2 stroke engine makes) to the far shore and hike the bank to the entrance, Laguna Yarinacocha is surrounded by a small village, though large enough to have it's own Plaza. The village is heavily populated by the Shipibo people. Very sweet and artistic, the Shipibo have a lovely disposition and language. The village has a small mercado and numerous restaurants, a few hostels, and one hotel. The road from the village to the Laguna is rough dirt and mud when it rains, potholes so deep you may lose a filling. The moto-taxis can be prone to toppling as we can attest...twice. There are a plethora of souvenir shops and roaming salepeople (mostly women and children). Competing PA systems blare various Spanish versions of American pop songs, and go-go dancers can be found gyrating as early as noon in the bars that surround the lake. The lake in the dry season is less than 5 meters deep fast forward to the rainy season and the laguna can raise as much 10-12 meters connecting the Ucayali and Amazon rivers and the piky pikys compete with container ships.
Laguna Yarinacocha is interesting, gritty, charming and a little trashy...I liked it.

The Cathedral is on Plaza de Armas and it is very nice place to visit. It is nicely appointed modern church. It is very peaceful ... and nicely cool & refreshing in hot day.

If you want to go there, the perfect time to leave Pucallpa is 4pm to arrive there for the sunset. It's a perfect place to watch it, how the sky starts changing color..it's quite and peaceful. Just bring something for the mosquitos because you may get bitten. Totally worth the little trip :)

This was an interesting zoo. For Pucallpa, it was pretty good. There were some really interesting cages that were all overgrown with no animals. The worst part was the trashy lake and broken bridge. The trash is easy to clean up, and they should. The range of animals was pretty good, though. Make sure you take your bug spray. It is Pucallpa!

There are not many places to visit in Pucallpa. Now city constructed pedestrian zone and in one end is Reloj Publico. You have nice view of river and you can visit nearby market. Reloj itself features pictures from Shipibo past and present. It is nice work.
