Portsoy Ice Cream

We are a family run business located in the picturesque harbour village of Portsoy in Aberdeenshire on the Moray Firth, Scotland and have a smaller outlet in Turriff. Alex and staff strive to create an exciting range of ice creams and sorbets which are all made in our Portsoy shop using the finest, and when possible, local ingredients. Over the years we have won numerous awards for our ice creams and sorbets at the National Ice Cream Competition and are preferred suppliers of Fasque House, a beautiful wedding venue.

Glenglassaugh Distillery Co.

Glenglassaugh was founded in 1875 by Colonel James Moir and his two nephews. After being mothballed for more than 20 years, production was re-started in 2008. Visit Glenglassaugh Distillery and experience a Revival or Behind the Scenes Tour. Tours available all year Monday to Friday, open Saturday and Sunday May to September.

We live nearby so went on a wet Monday afternoon with our visitors. As we wanted to taste the whisky we each paid for the £15 tour. Our guide, Jeannine was very good; she has an excellent knowledge of the history of the distillery and the processes involved in distilling. The tour lasted about 40 minutes and we were encouraged to ask as many questions as we liked. Unfortunately the distillery was not operational at the time but the smells and atmosphere were still there. The tastings were very good - I bought a bottle! Please note that there is a toilet but no cafe. There is a tiny shop with the usual fayre. I wouldn't recommend Glenglassaugh for the very elderly or infirm because there are steps, some quite steep. Glad we went, quite expensive but that's the going rate for similar tours so didn't begrudge paying. Would recommend.

Took my two boys up to see the improvements, can't see what's different!
We have always loved taking a trip there, the main tank was beautifully cleaned so maybe that's it?
Staff doing the talk - very knowledgeable and passionate about the fish.

Bow Fiddle Rock

We came here with a view to photographing Bow Fiddle Rock at sunrise . The vantage point for viewing the rock , is down a fairly steep slope to the beach . From other angle you don`t see the gap . The beach has stones pushed up from the waters edge , and you need good footwear , and balance to navigate your way to the waters edge .
Well worth it though

This small locally run museum has lots of interesting information with volunteer staff who know their history and explain it very well. It is free and they only ask for a donation. If you have family connections in the past with Portsoy they are the people to ask. At the moment there is a small exhibition commemorating the local lads who lost their lives in WW1 at the Battle of the Somme.
It was interesting to find out how the fishermen and their families lived.
Well worth a visit.

Duff House

A magnificent early Georgian mansion, designed by William Adam for the Earl of Fife. It is considered to be an Adam masterpiece and is one of the most important buildings in the North. The foundation stone was laid on the 11th June 1735 and the building was finished five years later, although it took over 100 years to complete the interior. Duff House is a jewel set in a stunning triangle of coast, river and parkland. There is a tea room and shop on ground-floor level, as well as temporary Exhibitions by visiting artists and societies.

We attended a wedding at Duff house yesterday. My mum who isn't very mobile took a slow stroll to the house from car park.Having climbed the many steps up to the House entrance she was a bit tired to find that there were more. One of the wedding party asked if there was a lift. Within seconds another member of staff escorted us to the lift and another gentleman greeted us at top. After the service he came and took us down again. We've never been to Duff house but having to go through some of the beautiful rooms to reach the lift we are definitely coming back for a visit. The staff were very helpful and friendly first class and the lovely lady in the gift shop. When we went out the heavens opened and was told that we could take the car to front of house so it would be easier for mum. The grounds also look lovely and plenty parking and play area for children
