We had an excellent local guide, Tey, take us around sites 1,2 & 3 & I doubt if we would have found the experience as interesting without his input because visually the sites are not very special. It is the history & evolving theories about the jars themselves that makes them worthwhile visiting.

The Mines Advisory Group (MAG) has been clearing unexploded bombs from the Vietnam War in Lao PDR since 1994. Visit the centre to learn more about UXO clearance in Lao. We have daily film showings, photo exhibits, games and more.
Opportunity to find out about MAG but limited. COPE in Vientiane gives much more detail. It's a short visit even if you read everything so easy to fit in around lunch

On the second floor there is a comfy area to watch a 28 minute video - it gives an excellent overview of the work the centre does.
It is worth spending 30 mins of your evening before heading to one of the local eateries further down the road or the simpler eateries across the road.
And take the opportunity of a massage by one of the blinded victims of UXOs who work down a side road nearby.

This is a small place in the heart of the Guesthouses and thoroughly worth a visit. It only needs 10-15 minutes but the information is well presented to help you understand this region of Laos. It is free but you can make a purchase or a donation to help. They also show 3 documentaries from 4pm (we didn't have time to see them so can't rate)

If you book a tour to the plain of jars you will stop here first because you must register.
It very nicely laid out with good display of information in the walls and some left over boms in the back.
If you go by bike to the plains stop by here anyway and learn something about the town and the area.
Recommended.

We specialise in arranging tours for tourists to explore the famous Plain of Jars sites located near Phonsavan, Laos. These sites have been a mystery not only for hikers but to archeologists and scientists around the world ever since their discovery in the 1930s. They have also been nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status and often referred to as a south-east Asian version of Stonehenge. If you wish to join our Plain of Jar Adventure Tour, please email us.
Yes, going to the plain of jars will take your time and money but we found it to be worth it. We did it by our selves and rented a motorbike (100.000). We went to site 1, 2 and 3.
Site one (15.000 kip entrance) is a fairly large area where you need to walk around a bit to see it all. It's definitely the most touristic one. They have alot of jars and a small cave that you can visit. Keep your eyes open and you'll find the only jar in Laos that has a man sculpted on the outside. You'll find it right up the seccond hill. After you've passed the trail to the cave.
Site two (10.000 kip) has two different sites. You can almost drive all the way up to the jars with a motorbike. The first site is on the left of the road, there are stairs leading up to the site. It was totally deserted when we were there and a thunder storm weren't far away and it gave the site a spooky feeling. There is alot of trees around and the darkness, thunder and the rattling of the leaves made us understand why some locals consider the jars hunted by ghosts. Here there are lots of cool pictures opportunities with the trees growing into the jars and so on.
The seccond site at site two is found on the right side of the road, again with stairs leading up to it. This one is more out in the open and you have some grand views over the hills around you. Here you can see the stone disk with the sculptured frog in the middle.
The third site (10.000) requires a serene walk through beautiful agricultural land before you reach the jars. What made this spot special were all the butterflies. You can also see how some of the jars has been used by the cows as scratchers. We were told that in some of the jars there are hidden buddha statues, but it started raining so we didn't stick around to look in all of them, so I can't confirm if it's true.
All in all we had a great day filled with mystical jars!

Highlight Plain of jar trek (Xiengkhouang province)
Xiengkhouang is a wonderful region and famouse plain of jars trekking and Xiengkhouang offers the best choice. This tour taking in some challenging treks through beautiful lanscape along the way to plain of jar site.
The site of Ban Phakeo is located within a forest deciduous tree with lichens and wild orchids, It's remoteness and atmosphere give it a mysterious air.
The site has nearly 400 sandstone jars, spread over four groups, These fine red sandstone have been carve with great skill and the fine grains allow a smooth finish, Unlike other jar sites Ban Phakeo has a number of stone lids.
These lids should not be confused with stone discs funtion as grave cover where as the lidsare domed, smaller and carved to fit the opening of the jars.
Some of the discs have animal figures, mainly tigers and monkeys carved on top of the stone. One discs carries a human figures, which is very samillar to the ''Frog man" of site one. Such human figures are known from rock paintings at Huasha in south China and also from India.
The lanscape is littered with sandstone fragments and a lot of the jars have been deliberately smashed to use as the base in grinder or a fragment for a whetstone.
Some contemporary Hmong grave are aso located amongst the jars, adding to the suggestion that the place has special 'funerary' significance.
The site was clear of UXO in 2007
