During the two world wars, the Germans feared an invasion across the Channel. So just to make sure, they fortified the whole North Sea Coast. Most of the fortifications have now been demolished to make room for other walls : high-rise buildings with apartments. But in Raversijde, a whole stretch of the Atlantic Wall has been preserved with its artillery, underground tunnels and bunkers, and gives a fair idea of the effort invested in the construction, but also of what life must have been like there during the wars.

This beach is quite popular. During the summer, the beach is filled with people. Some who wants a tan, others who walk or play and some who swim in the North Sea. Little kids look for shells, with which they can buy paper flowers.
The Lido is quite close. It's a place for kids to spend a whole day with lots of activities and making friends.
As for me, I preferred to come after 6 P.M. The beach is almost completely empty and I can enjoy the nature to the fullest. On this beach, we can always see the Kursaal. We cannot be lost, as long as we look at the Kursaal.
Anyone who needs a drink or food, they only have to go on the dike and they will find that without a problem. On the beach there is also a place where people can buy drinks.
My favorite time on this beach, is when the sun sets. It's amazing!
I love this beach and every time I come to Ostend, I go to the beach, even in the winter. It's a must to see how beautiful this beach is, especially with its sunsets!

As you exit the main train station in Ostend this massive trawler is probably one of the first sights that greets the eye.
It's hard to miss and is in fact a museum dedicated to the seaman and trawler men who brave the dangerous conditions to bring home their catch.
It's all in here to see from the galley, sleeping quarters, nets, equipment that are used by these brave men.
Well worth checking out.

The Tram stops close by making it very convienent to visit. Those that are really into WWI & WWII history should not miss. All others will still find it interesting to walk through at a faster pace.

The ship Mercator stands out among all the other ships in this harbor. This is why so many tourists visit this ship. It's a beauty! It has 3 masts and in those days, this ship was luxurious! They had running water and showers. Most of...MoreThank you very much for your kind and nice review!

This church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul is a hidden gem. It looks amazing from the outside, but inside the stain glass windows are magnificent.
You can light a candle for 0.75, 2 or 4 euros each, depending on your choice of candle.
It is free to go into. There are services on Sunday so visits are limited then.

Visited here especially to walk along the Promenade. Weather wise it wasn't the greatest day as it was very windy. However, there was nothing special to see and the things of interest (Disney sandcastle etc) you had to pay to see.
Ostend as a city is pretty bleak and the Promenade did not change our minds.

At the time, before everyone did their own driving, the train was the one way of getting to the coast, and the tramway the only way of exploring it. It is still a favourite, and (we are told) the longest tramway line in the world. With a season's ticket one can board and alight at will for no extra charge, and thus visit every single town or resort, from Knokke near the Dutch border to La Panne near the French one. Between Mariakerke and Middelkerke, the tram follows the coastline Promenade and offers a worthwhile view of beach and sea.

One of the main landmark sites in Ostend the Casino Kursaal Oostende is one amazing complex.
First and formost a casino, it also has exhibition rooms, restaurant ,disco and bar,it's a lively place and very popular with tourists and locals.
There are Symphonies and Concerts all year around and the restaurant's are very popular with stunning views looking out onto the famous Promenade, beach and sea.
As we always stay in the Ramada Hotel this casino complex is not to far away, tram 0 drops you off by the casino ,you will find the casino on Monacoplein.
A superb casino and tourist attraction and well worth checking out.
