This resort has really nice pretty green runs through the forest that are gorgeous, from the top of the mountain all the way down. It's nice that my family with younger kids can ski the whole mountain together. There are plenty of lifts and don't seem to be long lines. There are restaurant options (plenty) around the mountain for a fun day of skiing! Highly recommend!

Outstanding access! Approx.70minutes from Tokyo by shinkansen!
Great resort for all levels with a decent amount of runs. The resort is split into two side that have very different characters. One side has the large ski-in, ski-out hotel and some great runs for beginners. The other has a long gondola with amazing views from the top, and access to some steeper runs. Good facilities for kids and families. A nice onsen and rest room in the gondola building too.

Landscape: 4 stars
The Reservoir of the dam is very large (one of the largest in Japan), and covered by big Mountains, so it looks very nature. Visitors can get on a cruise to take a tour around the lake to see the landscape. To go up to this lake, they can take a slope car from the car parking area. The view from the lake down to the valley is very splendid. The best time to visit this place is in the middle of autumn, when all leaves turn to yellow and red. It is beautiful!
Suggested Itinerary:
1~2 hours is enough to visit this dam, but because it is located at a quite remote area, you may stay one night at a hotel in Uonuma before departing for this place in the next morning. There are some hotels with delicious foods and good on-sen (hot-spring) in the area. The road leading to the dam is also very thrilling with very narrow and long tunnels.

The view from the top of Mt. Hakkai's ropeway is quite spectacular, especially once you make your way to the viewing platform. Just make sure you go on a clear day.
And if you're adventurous, you can make the 2 1/2 hour trek to the summit - as long as you fill out a mountain climbing card ahead of time.
That said, the ride is a bit expensive: ¥1800 round trip or ¥1000 one way (you can walk back down in 90 minutes they claim), especially because if you aren't going to go to the summit, there isn't a whole lot to do once you get to the top of the ropeway other than look around.

Typical little countryside road station - local information, fresh produce from the surrounding fields and a good restaurant. A favorite stop for kids as there is a playground complete with bouncy trampoline, as well as a shallow paddling pool. Great in the summer.

We didn't use any of the runs, just some novice snowboarding in the large practice area, extremely crowded spot. Hotel was a huge money making factory, endless day trippers, food expensive and WOW $7 for a small cup of luke warm cocoa, could have got 5 hot cans from the machine for that price.

Despite the hefty price tag we enjoyed a good day at this water play land. The kids would loved to have spent much more time on the go-carts but you only get one go with your day pass. They managed to amuse themselves on the train, the merry-go-round, the 2 half pipe rides and the fabulous 'wild river' - pity the queues were so long - although the constant water spray kept you cool while waiting, and the non slip surface was appreciated! But actual spent most time on the 'balloon slide' - a bouncy castle mini zoom slide - great fun. The bottom pool is shallow, crowded and very slippery, but there are plenty of other places to hang out. Easy parking and way overpriced shelters available - take your own little tent like the locals do.

Took my 3 kids here one day, searching some peace and calm, a reprieve from jibber jabbing and requests for electronics. Stepped through the entrance gate and I was dwarfed by ancient trees, fresh air and a good excuse to zone out. Magnificent setting at the base of a mountain, cool haven in the summer heat and from what we could gather, an important temple for education once upon a time? Very much enjoyed it. Just down the road is a small children's park to let off steam and a friendly neighbour directed us to the fabulous noborikawa koen, a rambling riverside park perfect for BBQ and a chilly dip.

If you're in Niigata Prefecture, consider stopping by Bokushi Street in Shiozawa. Stroll up and down this quaint thoroughfare and soak up the feeling of the old Edo Period. There are a few good dining options, including a soba noodle restaurant and a cozy cafe which serves organic food and fresh coffee.
