The Levoca town has this historical and old charm that is difficult to describe. We simply felt in love with the town. The City Hall is the crown of the main square, but the rest of the buildings are also very beautiful. When we were there, a few local art craft booth were selling their products.

Right in the middle of the town, this is one of top attractions of Levoca, the other being the old town hall. Second biggest church in Slovakia, with impressive tower. Visiting in two stages. Stage one: opposite main entry to the church there's a new town hall, where you buy your tickets to see St. Jacob's church inside - photos forbiden. Stage two: on the other side of the church, in old town hall there's tourist information office, where you buy your tickets to climb the church tower. Both stages on guided tours only (Slovakian language only), both on the hour every hour (roughly), both highly recommended, the church hosts tallest in the world wooden altar, made by Master Paul of Levoča, while the tower provides fantastic views over the whole area, and towards high Tatra Mountains - the tower is the tallest building visible.

Town of Levoca is part of Unesco World Heritage since 2009, inscribed as "Levoča, Spišský Hrad and the Associated Cultural Monuments". Quite small town, where you can encircle the historic centre, walking alongside its town walls, in about 30 minutes. All major buildings, including church of St. James and the town hall are close to each other right in the middle of the town. There's also a number of museums in surrounding streets. And all of that supplemented by cafes and restaurants. We couldn't find ourselves a hotel to stay overnight in the town (or maybe it's just booking.com), but a place called Ubytovanie u Janusa done the job for us. Great place to spend a half of the day, unless you want to see all museums, than prepare to stay for the whole day.

The cage of shame is a must see / must stop as a throw back to medieval times when punishment was public. Although just behind the Town Hall in some ways it is easy to miss because we were looking at the buildings on the other side of the square that we passed it the first and second time before a quick five five-minute visit to this remnant of times gone bye.

Well, we didn't visit Marianska Hora in strict meaning, but that hill with a church on top, only 2 km north from Levoca, is clearly visible from few places in town itself, So it is worth climbing a St. Jakob church tower, or taking to the west side of town walls, to enjoy the view. The access to Marianska Hora from Levoca is by winding road that leaves town from its northeast corner.

The Czechoslovak government tried to arouse new international interest for the early 16th c. sculptor Meister Paul and had many excellent facsimiles of his works made, that can be partly admired on this location. The visit is included in the same ticket as the Town Hall and the city museum so there is no reason not to see it.

Museum in authentic medieval house from the artist himself..A large collection of wooden religious carvings are exposed here. Very detailed sculptures which used to stay in Churches.. With the ticket for the museum, you can visit two other museums in the town. A must see when you're in town.

There're four buildings set in a line on Levoca's main square, but this southernmost building is hugely overlooked by tourists, still clearly visible from every corner of the square. Much, much smaller Cage of Shame, standing half way between town hall and evangelical church is much more adored, and nobody goes a bit further to see the church. Built in first half of 19th century on Greek cross plan, as a replacement for much older church, which stood - for political reasons - outside the town walls. Recently undergoing refurbishment.

The whole town of Levoca is very interesting, but most tourists concentrate their visiting plans around the town hall and main church, while the town walls are slightly less popular. Which is wrong actually, as some west parts provide very nice views over surrounding hills, including a church on one of the hills, called Marianska Hora. The best part of the walls is alongside Bastova street on the west side, with steep abyss on the other side, but some large parts are well preserved on the other side of the town, at Probstnerova cesta street, where walls are strenghtened by towers. There's also two preserved gates: Košická brána gate and Poľská brána gate. Altogether about 80% of the walls still exists, although some parts are 20th century reconstruction. Only the south part has dissapeared long time ago. Worth a little walk around the town, especially that the area within the walls has been inscribed onto Unesco World Heritage List.

Located in northeast corner of the old town in Levoca, stands next to town walls, right at one of the gates. Built on the site of the oldest church in town - hospital church of Holy Spirit from 11th century. That wooden church caught fire in 18th century, and has been dismantled, and then replaced by current buildings. It is said that this is the finest baroque church in Spis region of Slovakia. Always open for tourists. Nice little passage between church and town walls.
