Lào Cai ( listen) is a city in the Northwest region of Vietnam. It is the capital of Lào Cai Province. The city borders the city of Hekou Yao Autonomous County, in the Yunnan province of southwest China. It lies at the junction of the Red River (Sông Hồng) and the Nanxi River (Yunnan) approximately 160 miles (260 km) northwest of Hanoi.

Enjoyed a massage after a day-long trek from Sapa up to this beautiful little village. Our guide, from Handspan Travel, mentioned that there was a spa right next to our homestay location. He wasn't kidding, it was around the corner where a gentle man proceeded to provide a soothing massage in a bucolic setting at a very nice price. I was so complimentary about the experience that my 'massage averse' hiking companion had to stroll over for a foot massage.

We visited this with friends before getting the night train back to Hanoi. Starts to close down at 1.30 so it's really a morning activity. I found the animal bit a tad distressing bit overall really liked the shopping here. Pop into the temple close by for a spot of culture.

This was about a 3 hour ride from Sapa to the Cao Son Market. The last 1 1/2 hr was on a very bumpy road.Cao Son Market was a small local market but still interesting to watch all the local people barter in their colorful attire. Scenery was somewhat cloudy the day we went. Imagine on a clear sunny day, it would be more lovely.
If you are passing by, it would be a shame to miss it. However, if you can afford to choose, relatively close Bac Ha market is livelier and has more variety on offer (both etnically and goods for sale).

We stopped to visit this temple in Lao Cai. It is literally next to the border with Mainland China. There is much cross border trading here . In 1979, China invaded Lao Cai for a brief time before retreating back to China. There is a long series of stairs to get up to the temple. The deity worshipped here is Princess Lieu Hanh. It is a national landmark. Spent 20 minutes here. Went in March, 2013

We organized 3D2N trip, trekking up from Lao Cai and down via Lai Chau province, so we enjoyed scenery from both sides. Lai Cai side, you will see a lot of Mountains, on Lai Chau side, you will go through beautiful Forests.
Tips:
- warm clothes, it’s quite cold at night.
- trekking poles, which help with climbing up and down.
- see sunset, sunrise, star from Muoi Hill, just a short distance from the campsite.
- sea of clouds is one of the best in Vietnam.
Enjoy!

As you may know Sapa is one of the best destinations in Vietnam as well as well-know on the world. Lying in the northen of Vietnam, Sapa is place living of five difference ethnic minorities groups such as: Black Hmong, Red Rzao, Tay, Day a
My partner and I booked this tour online. We found this to be a great way to immerse ourselves in Vietnam culture in a short time. The tour company was well organized, and our tour leader Mu was so helpful and friendly. HANDY HINTS; if you're trekking (especially in the wet season) make sure you hire the gumboots at the offer. This is a must! Also bring spare underwear and socks and pants, because you will slip over allot. Also, be weary of the local tribe women, they will offer you help over the trek (which can be handy because they guide down the hills) but they will also expect you to buy something off them at the end as a thank you (scarves, bags etc). There will also be HEAPS of children trying to sell you goods. And if you find a local tribewoman starts to follow you, make sure you tell them you aren't buying anything because otherwise they'll follow you for hours. Just be firm. The accommodation was clean and comfortable, and so much delicious food with vegetarian options. Highly recommend this experience! I just wish we would have a bit more information before the trip. Cheers guys.

Located in Vietnam’s remote North West Mountains, Sapa is famous for both its fine, rugged scenery and also its rich cultural diversity. Its lush, deep river Valleys, in the shadows of Vietnam’s tallest peak Mount Fansipan, are home to Blue H’mong and Red Dao communities, who continue to maintain their strong traditions and warmly welcome visitors to their homes.
