The water around Ishigaki is pure blue, with white sandy beaches to soothe your senses. But don't just stand on the beach and stare. Travelers recommend a ride in a glass-bottomed boat to gaze at the coral reefs and tropical fish from above.

Kabira Bay is one of the most beautiful sites on Ishigaki and should basically be a must for every visitor of the island., Much recommended is the 30 minute ride around the bay in one of the glass bottom boats, where you can admire the huge variety of tropical fish, neon fish, the corals, giant clams on the sea bottom, sea snakes etc. The 30 minute tour is about 1000 Yen per person, which is not excessive.. After the tour, go to the observation point on a hill above the beach, and you have a wonderful view of the bay and its different shades of blue......

Enjoyed a walk along this beach, beautiful setting. Incredible colours in the water, and mad looking rock formations with trees growing on them.
Overall loses a star because of the lack of amenities, the old run down boats, and general feel that this place is neglected by the local authority.

Tamatorizaki Observatory point was close to our hotel, so we visited on a clear day. From the Observatory you have splendid views of the east coast and lagoon of the island, as well as parts of the western coast. Apparently the Observatory point is also good to watch shooting stars, but obviously you need a clear starry night to do that, and n the night we drove up, there were too many clouds....

It is said that this is the most beautiful beach, but please check the period when you want to go. When we came here, the water was very low and turned this beautiful place into an ugly one.

Now it's the firefly season in Ishigaki. You can visit the firefly path in Banna park in the evening and see the wonderful firefly dance along the path.
You don't have to spend money to join those firefly tour. Just go to Banna park and look for the sign of "Firefly path".
Ps. The fireflies are shy and please don't point your flashlight to them.

We decided as we were in the area to call into the village but took quite a while to find by car as we could not find a sat nav code, entrance charge I thought on the expensive side, and you do have to pay extra for other things once inside crafts, dressing up etc..
Fine to look around the houses and to sit and listen to a older gentlemen play a traditional instrument, but really I did find it rather dull on the whole.
Apart from the small monkeys who will sit, crawl, jump on you if you have paid the 200y for food in a small plastic container, as they will cajole you to open your hands for the tasty treats, they really are too cute, but be aware they can get you very dirty. I really did not like to see the water buffalo and the birds in such small areas, quite depressing and sad.
The small mangrove forest area was very interesting as it was low tide and there was nobody there but ourselves.

This beach is easily accessible by bus. Take the Kabira Ressort Rout from Ishigaki Bus Terminal and get out at the Fusaki Beach Ressort. You walk straight through the entrance of the ressort and out again through the glass doors on your right and you're almsot at the beach. The beach is used by hotel guest and is open to the public.
It was very quite, almost secluded with most hotel guest swimming in the pool and not in the ocean.
Our favoirte part was the dock. It was open for the public again! Although mid June the dock was very secluded. At the end of the dock you have a great view of two bays. You can also just sit there in the shade and enjoy the view for hours.

Lots and lots of different tour companies. Almost everything is in Japanese (although toilets are marked in English). Couple different ATMs, at least one of which will accept overseas cards. We had booked a tour from our hotel and went to one of the tour desks to do the paperwork. Agent spoke passable English. We didnt find long wait times but we were there early. There were a few stores selling food and souvenirs but not all that many. For shopping, you're probably better off going a couple blocks away to the Public Arcade.
