Had a great week skiing in Hemsedal. Better than expected snow quality for the later end of the season with most runs open. Quiet lifts and slopes.
Good value accommodation, we stayed at the Bakken apartments which are a stones throw from the pistes and whilst simply kitted out were roomy, spotlessly clean and had everything you needed for a very comfortable self catering stay. We were a couple but the sofa looked like it was a sofa bed and the apartment living space was large enough to possibly accommodate a young family.
Particular thanks goes to the ski school. There were just three in our group and we had a fantastic teacher in David who gave lots of personal feedback. If you are an intermediate/confident skier used to large french resorts I would recommend the lessons as Hemsedal is not as big. You might start to get a bit bored by yourself but with the lessons you have new things to work on each day which kept things interesting for us. Alternatively there are guided off-piste groups but there wasn't enough snow for us to try these.
Also looked very well set up for families and children with a large area dedicated to children.
We travelled there by train and bus from Oslo and it was very easy with all the transport being on time and the buses lined up to collect/drop off at the train station. There is a signpost at Gol train station telling you where to wait for the bus (just further down the platform) and the bus will collect you from there.
Would highly recommend.

Solheisen Skisenter is located in Grondalen, ca 11 km from the centre of Hemsedal. The resort at the Sunshine side of Hemsedal is known as a nice area for families and offers good possibillities for off piste.

Experience the scenic Mountains in Hemsedal driving a dog team of six dogs. The cart is for 2-3 persons and has shock absorbers and good breaks. Booking: on request, ask at Hemsedal Tourist Office, tel: +47 32 05 50 30, [email protected], www.hemsedal.com.
We travelled up from Oslo to take part in this fantastic experience. We were picked up by taxi at the confirmed time from Hemsedal and taken up to the Husky Dogs, where we were provided with protective clothing. The owner was very friendly and welcoming and we were given clear instructions. It has to be one of the best experiences in my life - it really is an exceptional adventure - the speed, the silence other than the swish of the sledge through the snow and the amazing scenery. We were out for about 2 hours with a few short stops. I would say make sure you have the correct footwear- body wise we were warm, plus we had a couple of pairs of thermal socks on, but our feet were seriously freezing. We had to thaw out in a warm shed when we returned for a good half an hour!!
I cannot recommend this trip highly enough - you must do it!!

The place have after ski entertainment but that's not available every week.
We went there for some bowling and a meal.
The bowling was good, good tracks with all you need in technicalities: fences and automatic score count system. Great!
The pizzas were quite poor, the stuffing was very limited and the bread was burned and hard as crisp bread with a touch of burned bread. Good for my diet but a big disappointment as a pizza.
The service is great and very friendly. Prices on par with other places in the village: expensive like a Michelin restaurant.

Hemsedal has many beautiful hiking tours for all levels. The hikes are well marked and signed and you can buy a very good hiking map for Hemsedal were you have all hiking paths. One of the tours we recommend is Veslehodn 1300 masl. Veslehodn is a spectacular hike with great scenery and heights. The trip can be combined with a trip to Hydnefossen that has a waterfall of 140 meters, or visit the older brother Storehodn 1482 masl. Velsehodn is a trip for the whole family or for the more active persons. The trip takes about 5 hours up and down and is a total 4.2 km. Every Tuesday and Friday at 10:00 am from 5. of June, there is guided tour to Velsehodn. The starting point is outside of Hemsedal Tourist Office . The trip is part of Topp20 program to Hemsedal, which means that the trip is well marked and signposted. Have a great experience in our beautifull nature! Please do not litter!
I have a friend who says this is the place in Hemsedal that gives you the most mountain experience for every calorie. I believe he is right. I have been here 7-8 times and it it still my favourite in all of Hallingdal. You can easily visit Storehorn on the same trip. If you are afraid of heights.... you can still go, but not to the edge. It is straight down and a long way down. But you can go to the top of Veslehorn without going to the edge.

From the summit of Ranastongji, there is a fantastic view over Jotunheimen, Hurrungane and the Jostedal glacier. Just behind the summit is a very special canyon that has a shear drop of approx. 600 m. Ranastongji is one of the 20 mountain summits in Hemsedal’s hiking programme, “Top 20 summits”. Distance: 12 km Duration: 6 hrs. Degree of difficulty: Requires endurance
This is a great hike. The 750 meter ascent is evenly distrubuted, except one short distance that is a little steeper. You walk along a beautiful stream from the parking at Vavatn. (NOK 50 roadtoll). Lots of Boulders, but fairly easy to walk. 6 kilometers rewards you With maybe the best view in all of Hemsedal. Take a small detour to the east to look down into the canyon "Hestebotten".

Would you like to know more about mountain farming? Join a weeken course at Ulsakstolen summer pasture with focus on history and food traditions on a mountain farm. Help with animals, join a mountain hike, and learn how to make sour cream, butter and cheese.
We visited Hemsedal on our roadtrip to Noeway and Denmark. Hemsedal with it's 20 peaks stole my heart.
For every peak, you get a pin at the touristkontor at Hemsedal town centee (you do have to pay 20NOK though!)
Information is well provided by the friendly people at the kontor. Hikes are well documented and marked.
I will definately go back for the remaining 18 pins!

Horse sledding on Tuesdays during the winter season in pleasant surroundings in Lykkja. The trip lasts ca 50 minutes. Booking at Hemsedal Tourist Office or directly to Hemsedal Hestesenter at least one day in advance before 15.00
If you want to spend several days on the back of a Norwegian - Belgian Horse, seeing Norweigan countryside which can only be seen by foot, you'll love this.
The owner's name is Morton, and he is 100% authentic Viking! He even has some authentic moonshine, if you should like to try it.
They care very much about the horses, and the proper care thereof. You'll be responsible for catching, saddleing, and caring for your horse for the duration. You'll prepare your lunch each day when you have breakfast, and there will be soda's supplied at the lunch location each day.
Guys...... Wear a JOCK! NOT A CUP! you'll appreciate it.
Bring lots of A&D ointment, again, you'll be glad you did.
Enjoy the charming train ride from OSLO!!!!!!
