Wonderful museum with the original flooring and machines used during the pre- union industrial period.
They have some of the original housing used by workers and their families.
The only problem was that none of the info plaques were in english. We had a german speaking person with us and one of our group was a textile artist so they could explain.

We went for a walk on a beautiful Sunday around the Aasee in Bocholt and so did many others. There are different paths to follow so you can take short or longer ways round and there also are differnt lanes for pedestrians etc. Now one knows that riding a bike is the prefered way of moving around Bocholt but as apedestrian you always have to be on your guard and the separate lanes were not as helpful as one might hope which spoiled the walk a little for us. You can reach the city with it's cafes from the Aasee which is delightful!

the Bocholter Rathaus is more then the noble city hall: it spreads its century-old soul over the square, where Bocholts city life meets the countryside with their 4 or 5 fairs a week with everything that comes from local farming and production.
on top of that: the best espresso you can have is served there, at the already legendary Eiscafe Leone.
Whenever in Bocholt visit the Rathaus, a beautiful building, full of details and a historical milestone of the city itself and open to visitors, as the guest-friendly profile of the city itself.

I grew up in Bocholt and then I was 25 years away form my whole childhood. Visiting Bocholt, a cozy, amusing, lively and very clean city, there are two spots I had to immediately go: one is the Aasee, the lake that transformed a region and leisure activities, and the Stadtwald - a carefully guarded wood by all the community, city hall and its visitors.
Bocholt is a bike city: everybody, literally, has a bike to cruise through the flat geography of the region and the Stadtwald is suited for family cycling on easy mode throgh the wood, where you can spot Wild boar, fallow deer, red deer, goats and sheep you can strike, flamingos or cranes,. The Rodelberg is the highest peak in Bocholt and also one of the favourite walking places - there is a particular spot, they called it the wedding garden, where couples can put up a sign with their names and planting a tree on their wedding day - I liked that idea a lot!
On the hot sunny days, the Stadtwald is the right place to chill in the shade, with a cool breeze sofyly running through the leaves.
After having a very nice meal in the theme restaurant in the woods, my children really loved the playground...where I used to be a kid, too - only that moment by itself was worth the whole trip.
as they say in German: mein Bocholt!

Shopping - Arkarden in Bocholt.

The owner guided me through this museum. Enthusiasm is good, but here I felt a little awkward. The guy kept talking about the bargains he got in acquiring the various items. Nevertheless, it is nice to see so many different old crafts all in one place, almost for free. The buildings are also very nice recreations.

The city museum is mainly about the history of Bocholt and surroundings, with some additional modern art and industry. The modern industry consists of producing parts for wind turbines (so I understood at least). The modern art consisted of paintings by one painter. The archeological section was very nice. It had some fairly standard items such as tools from the stone, bronze, and iron ages, and mammoth and reindeer bones. Quite special is the skull part of a woolly rhino. There are also fossils and minerals. There are medieval documents important for the city history. A sword, medieval tools and shoes, pottery, a helmet, a shoulder plate, a model of Bocholt in the early 17th century, and items relating to the world wars. There's fine glass from the 17th century and 15th century drawings. There's an old bike to remind us that someone from Bocholt invented the German word for bike. And finally a room dedicated to the textile industry of Bocholt. A fine collection for a city like Bocholt.

an astonishing and difficult story, connected to World War II, when the town of Bocholt was bombed by the Allied Forces.
