The Shwethalyaung, a colossal reclining statue of Buddha (181 feet [55 m] long), is to the west of the modern town and is reputedly one of the most lifelike of all the reclining Buddha figures; allegedly built in AD-994, it was lost when Bago (Pegu) was destroyed in 1757 but was rediscovered under a cover of jungle growth in 1881. Shwethalyaung Buddha is the second largest reclining Buddha.

This one is likely to be on your Bago itinerary and it is well worth visiting it. I guess at some point any person reaches a reclining Buddha saturation point but this one stands out for its size as well as how carefully carved/constructed it is. Recommended.

Instead of the usual bell shape pagoda temples found in almost everywhere in Myanmar, this temple depicts 4 enormous Buddha sitting facing in four directions.
When I visited this temple, my initial impression is not so impressive. However, do not understated the expression of the 4 Buddha. As you walk around the Buddha Statues, you will observe their facial expression changes. Their facial expression are different from distance away and in near sight.
Certainly worth walking round the site to view.

We were late and thus missed meeting/observing the monks while having their lunch. It's an interesting complex to see otherwise but not quite the highlight of our Bago trip that we had hoped for. If you are short on time we would suggest you focus on the palace, the most famous pagoda and one of the reclining Buddhas instead.

A boring pagoda that doesnt let women up to the top. The staircases to the top were actually closed when we came here. Otherwise place is dull and filthy.

This Pagoda is the foremost site of Hanthawaddy Bago & the place where Twin Mon Brothers from Suwanabuumi ( Thaton ) had seen female Hinsa ( Goose ) standing on Male Goose! The most interesting & attracting place in this pagoda is " Bago Me Daw Gyi " Nat Shrine at the entrance of Pagoda. If someone who would like to see Nat Worship in Myanmar , it's one of the best places in Myanmar. Bago Me Daw Gyi Nat is regional Nat ( Spirit ) for Bago Region & Many locals believe this Nat and paying respect to her when they are visiting this Pagoda!

Its not as Glamorous as other Temples & Pagodas in Myanmar. but if you have the time make a visit as this temple too like most temples & pagodas in Myanmar is full of history.
Take a guide or Guide book as language is a problem in Myanmar.
Also be appropriately dressed as a mark of respect to Buddhism.

There have been some negative reviews about this location but we found it very interesting and worthwhile. The history of this Pagoda is fascinating and the 19ft python seemed well cared for and content with the freedom to slide around her room in close proximity to worshipers and visitors alike. The people there were very friendly and is a nice place to spend some down time from Yangon.
