A coastal resort complete with hot springs, Atami has been a favorite vacation spot for Tokyoites dating back to Tokugawa Ieyasu. Though the city's main draws are its beach boardwalk and spas, visitors can take in some history staying in early 20th-century private villas converted to inns and catching the afternoon Geisha dance performance at Geigi Kenban.

It has been 33 years since MOA Museum of Art was established in 1982, and we are currently carrying out refurbishment construction to renovate the exhibition space and museum facilities. The renovation of its lobby area and exhibition galleries are being provided by New Material Research Laboratory, led by world-renowned contemporary artist Hiroshi Sugimoto and architect Tomoyuki Sakakida. Contrary to its name, New Material Research Laboratory is focused on researching materials and techniques used in ancient, medieval, and early modern times, and finding ways to incorporate them in contemporary architecture and pass them down to the future. They will be exploring a myriad of possibilities to design incredible spaces for the MOA Museum of Art. The concepts of MOA Museum of Art are as follows: The Fundamental Plans of the Museum We shall aim to become a museum transmitting information of Japanese Art. We shall promote the development of tourism, art and crafts. Having a cooperative p
This museum can boast more about its facilities and setting than its collection. The entry through the escalators is luminous & colorful. View from the museum of the city and Sagami bay is also breathtaking. Should take a break in the cafe and enjoy.

Another place to stop by while visiting Atami is the "Kiunkaku" which is a luxury lodge and garden with Japanese and Western architecture constructed in 1919, and was frequented by the literati and dignitaries of the day. Though it no longer operates as a lodge, it is a popular location for shooting period dramas, and is open to the public as an open walk through museum. It just so happens that, like in many tourist sites, there aren't any descriptions or explanations in English.

They say, if you have seen one shrine the rest are pretty much the same but visiting the "Kinomiya" shrine with the 2000 year old giant camphor tree is worth it & if you walk around the tree (it's the only way to appreciate the massive trunk) your life will be extended by a year. The additional life is a bonus !

This shrine is on Izusan, the hill overlooking Atami. After walking up the steps there you would see the arch and then the small shrines on the two sides, and the Fountain where you can clean your hands and then drink the spring water.
The shrine itself was not particularly impressive, but if you have time you can walk further uphill to the main temple. If you are in Atami it is a good spot to go.

My friend and I visited Hatsushima at the suggestion of our hostel manager. The boat ride there was exhilarating (beware the seagulls!) and the views looking back towards the coast of Honshu were excellent. We walked all over the island, visited the lighthouse, and played around amongst the main park's cherry blossoms. At the end of our day, we ate ice cream while waiting for our boat back, and even skipped it for the next one - the ice cream shop owner treated us to free coffee/tea and delightful (Google Translate-enabled) conversation.

We visited Atami Plum Garden on Feb 8, 2016 during Ume Blossom Festival. This is actually my first time visiting Atami, it's a beautiful place. Atami Plum Garden is located near Kinomiya station instead of Atami station. Getting off at Kinomiya station and taking about 10-15mins walk uphill, you will find the garden.

This is a sort of "secret" garden located an hour outside of Tokyo about 15 minutes from Atami shinkansen station. They have an incredible amount of roses and other flowers there. They also have the biggest bonsai tree you'll ever see....
They drive you up to the top of the mountain in a little bus and then you walk down the mountain thru many different types of Gardens.
If you time it in late April/early May you will see all the spring flowers blooming like crazy. Late May/June is full-blow rose garden blossoms.
If you time it right once a year they have a cos-play day where Japanese people who are into dressing up as nurses or Goldilocks or other unusual people are dressed up and wandering around the garden. It is really strange but fun to see it.

The Atami Fireworks are unique in Japan, in that they take place once every season rather than once a year. Shot off over Atami Bay, spectators watch from the beachfront along the waterway, sharing picnics and marveling at the bursts of color. Especially lauded is Atami's aquatic themed rocket, used in the Grand Finale: the "Aerial Niagara Fall".
Well worth a detour to experience this - great viewing spots all along the sea front. Come outside - if you watch from your hotel room you will not get the multiple bangs reverberating off the Mountains behind you. Book early for a hotel room, or you will need to do what we did - get a room just outside in the next town, and catch a taxi in - about 10 minutes. Lots of street food stalls to choose from.

This is a shopping arcade just beside JR Atami station. Here you can find any souvenir of Atami such as Onsen Manjyu (a kind of cake). There are also some unpretentious restaurants.
