We were working near here and had bad experiences at 2 hotels nearer work so booked one in Alcala. What a beautiful surprise! Our hotel was minutes walk from this gorgeous street, loads of quaint shops and lovely bars and restaurants.
The street comes alive after 8pm, music and people everywhere.
Grab a table, a Sangria, some Tapas and watch the world go by.

We visited Alcala de Henares in January 2018, as part of our winter vacation. This square names as Cervantes's Square is like the plaza mayor or the main square., It is an essential crossing point to visit the historic center of the city.
A statue of Miguel de Cervantes is there, also the Comedy Corral and the tower of St. Mary, you can go there to get the best views of the square and the city.
Also we visited the Christmas market. And Shops and cafes are around the plaza.

Majestic Monastery of Madre de Dios belonged to Dominican Order and it was erected in 1565. It went through major renovations in 17th and especially in 18th century which brought current apperance of the building. In 1999 former monastery adopted new role of Regional archaeological Museum. Positioned across the Archbishopal pallace, with entrance at the Plaza de las Bernardas which leads you in plateresque two floored cloister. That part today serves as space for contemporary exibitions (during my time of visit there was an exibition of prehistoric wildlife). Interior of the Museum brings you on demarcated tour around the permanent exposition regarding different settlers and cultures since the paleolithic to the medieval era, going through Iberians, Romans, Visigoths, Arabs and Castillans. Currently, after its many expansions, the Museum takes up more than 6 000 square meters. If you are into archeology and local history, this big space could take more than hour to fully analyze all the exponents. Keep in mind that close to medieval city of Alcala there are ruins of Roman city of Complutum to the east and ruins of Arab fortress of Qal`at Abd al-Salam to the west, which provided plenty of material for Museum. Entrance comes for free.

The Museo Casa Natal de Cervantes is located at the place where, according scholars, Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra's (1547-1616) family home was and where the litterateur was born and spent his early years. The different rooms of the building recreate the customs, tastes and daily activities of the 16th and 17th centuries, with the aim of feeling the presence of their inhabitants. The Museum also has an impressive collection of Cervantes' works from different periods and in different languages that are exhibited in the temporary exhibition room. The Museum provides a consolidated programme of activities of many different kinds: children's and adolescents' workshops, thematic visits, musical and theatrical Performances, conferences, etc. The activities take place throughout the year, with special emphasis on dates that are important to the institution, such as International Book Day (April 23), Museum Night (May 18) and Cervantes Week (October 12).
A quite delightful (and very compact) museum that is free to enter - a real step back in time. Very pleasant staff and well worth seeking it out.

The Cathedral itself is spectacular but the exhibits on its history and the history of Alcala de Henares are as impressive. They really helped us get a good feel for how this town developed.

Excellent value ne €1. Although some of the intersting signs were only in Spanish was still excellent . I do reccommend a visit. Though you need to know, if driving drive past and come back towards the town as it's is then on your right ie the side of the road you are on..

This monument looks like a remain from the Moorish conquest of the majority of Iberia, but upon examining its history, you'll be astoonished that it was built in the 19th Century, more than 700 years since the Moors were defeated in Alcalá! I thought it was a mosque because its architecture is that of a mosque, besides you can see Arabic scripture on the arcades and facades of the building, even you can observe a minaret-like cylindrical ancillary structure next to it!

The Convent “The Clarisas de San Diego” is more like a normal house, and is located on the corner of the streets “Beatas” and “San Diego de Alcalá“, and this is only a few steps away from the tourist info, on your way you will pass also the “Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso”.The Clarissa nuns are an enclosed religious order, so that you can’t see them.
