YMMV as far as expectations go, but for me everyone who had come back from Yufuin wouldn't stop raving on about this place.
So when time came for me to take a trip to Yufuin I was severely underwhelmed. Don't get me wrong, the swiss rolls taste great, but they weren't the mind-shatteringly amazing dessert that people made it out to be.
Furthermore, the small size was always sold out, forcing people to buy the much larger size.
No knives were packaged with the swiss roll, making this difficult to eat in our accommodation. They do give you these miniature forks so there's that.

Ever since our first visit, we (especially my wife) have fallen in love with this restaurant..
Located on the top of a small hill, the view of Yufu City is terrific both in the day and night time, especially if you can get the outdoor tables.. I am not sure if buses are passing that area, so getting there may be inconvenient if you plan to take any public transportation from the station.. but if you drive, it is not too far from the Yufuin IC highway gate. I also saw some guests getting there with taxi..
They don't offer too many things in the menu but all basic Italian dishes are available. Our favorite is quattoro formagi pizza with four kind of cheeses (the amount is quite generous actually..) Besides pizza, they also have spare-ribs (one of highly recommended dishes), pasta, salads, etc..
In our last visit, we went together with my mom who is a strict vegetarian.. Initially I was not sure if they could provide something for my mom.. But surprisingly they accommodated our request (excluding meat and onion in her dish) so that my mom could have something to eat..
Again, this place is highly recommended.. but be careful if you come during lunch time as it may be congested.. since I speak Japanese, I am not sure if the staff can speak any English but pictures are available in the menu.. their homepage is also available (Japanese only.. but menu is also written in Romans alphabet) http://kunugi.ptu.jp/index.html

Followed the advice from a fellow trip advisor contributor and had lunch there. It was a plain restaurant serving local food at a reasonable price. There was a notice that asked people to be accommodating as the waiting staff was not that young, and they were right - the staff was quite advanced in age but doing well none the less.
The food variety was limited, not sophisticated yet acceptable.
There was also a small local produce market attached.

This is part of Sanso Murata. The ambiance is very relaxed. My wife and I opted for seats in front of the fireplace. We drank some high end Yamazaki and Hakushu Japanese whiskey. Though there were maybe 9-10 other guests, it was very quiet. We could barely hear anything except for the passing by of another guest or the crackling of the fire. This is a great place to go and just chill out and enjoy a fine beverage.

There are so many dressers and sweets on the street, yet very few choice left to me, I'm totally not with sugar tooth..
But this one, is exactly what I would like!
Fresh made, smells wonderful, so is taste! I had 2 kinds, the signature one and the cheese on, both delicious.

This was recommended by our accomodation's host. It was a short walk away and hence we decided to have our late lunch here, after spending a few hours travelling from Kumamoto to Beppu.
The sushi were generally nice and we loved the unagi sushi the most. The unagi melted in our mouths!! There was free flow of miso soup too.

Found this on Tripadvisor for the restaurant near our hotel. It located just opposite of the train station. It seems to be quite famous. It was a weekday dinner so without waiting we got our seat. Tempura is the one that i saw recommended. We had the signature tempura chicken and I had my set meal with fish. The tempura chicken tasted good, the batter is different from what i had in Fukuoka. My set meal are good too except they forgot my main dish - the fish. Until I finished everything and checked, they only realized the fish had not yet swim to me.

Cosy and comfortable. Good food and drinks. Great service. Too bad I don't know more Japanese. Sort of followed an elderly gentleman sitting beside who seems to know his food and enjoys specialty food. Hope to return again some day.
