Proud Kumamoto Castle is considered one of the most important of its kind. Visitors will be awed as they explore its stone curves, array of turrets, and displays of armor, weapons, and maps. Suizenji Jojuen Garden is downright cinematic, a playground of slopes and dips and trees, in a million shades of green. Cherry blossom season is a lovely time to visit.

Don't go to Kumamoto just to see this castle, at least for the next 10 years. Once it is fully restored after the earthquake, yes by all means do come to Kumamoto only to see this, as perhaps the most beautiful castle in Japan. However, if you are already in Kumamoto, do walk around the castle grounds and take a peek. One can get a glimpse of the dimension of the earthquake by the amount of collapsed walls and massive structures which are still bleeding, with their guts and bones out. Terrifying, if you have been through strong earthquakes before.

The Japanese garden I started to make than 1963. In area of about 73,000 square meters and it is a compact in which it is said that Japan's largest garden, rich in spring water from Mt. Aso, and has created a world of different dimension to the urban space. Landscape, is also said to have reproduced the landscape of the Tokaido, including Fuji Gojusantsugi.
This place is awesome. It can get quite hot in the summer, but it is very well maintained Japanese park. There are many nicely shaped trees and bushes. It is very very clean. There are a lot of fish in the lake and there is even an airconditioned resting place for really hot days. It is well worth coming

500-yen for all day I used the tram to get acquainted with Kumamoto city. The tram charges 170-yen for each ride but with the 500-yen all-day pass, you can get off and on as many times throughout the day. The major attractions such as the Kumamoto Castle, Suizenji Garden and the shopping dining areas are along the tram route.

He was a famous war lord. A nice shrine close to the main building of Kumamoto Castle. This shrine is across the moat so you can see some of the damaged areas around the castle from the Kato Shrine.

Happening shopping stretch. Tram stop just outside. You can spend a day here. Mix of modern brands and souvenir stores. Parco, Zara and several Japanese Malls are located here. The modern art museum with free admission is nearby. You will be spoilt for choice with the abundant cafes and restaurants. Explore the small streets on the sides too. When you are here, have at least one meal at Yossou restaurant located at hamamachi in the same area. It's famous chawanmushi is indeed the best I've had.

This was second time I visited this pretty park in a year - last time it was in the morning and this time around 4pm, the view was somehow different because of sunlight but still was very impressive. We were lucky this time there was a latern festival. Should not be missed if visiting Kumamoto.

Besides me there was nobody there. Wonderful house and garden to explore design and layout.
They give you a booklet as all signs are Japanese only. I found that sufficient. Fewer signs would have allowed for better images.
After walking past the castle which was visited by at least a gazillion students, the calm building was refreshing.

The Kumamoto castle was recently damaged heavily by an earthquake so the castle grounds are closed. You may walk around the perimeter and then you’ll come across this nice statue of a famous warlord. There is a shrine to honor him half-way around the perimeter of the castle ground which would be interesting to visit. From there you can see more of the damage done to the castle grounds.

You can taste horse meat, horse croquettes, sweet potatoes icecream, deep fried lotus, octopus cake balls, uni( sea urchin) fried balls, ice juices, green tea and loads more.
You may find some souvenirs here as well.
There is parking here, but not much parking lots.
A place to go prior or together with the Kumamoto castleX it is just next to the castle.
