Every year we visit Brunel to celebrate our mother's birthday. Long-time owners Sjoerd and Irma and their crew succeed again and again in maintaining a high level of hospitality and a great kitchen so we will surely be back again (anyway next year)!

We were staying over in Leiden but felt a trip to Gouda was a must. To buy cheese there just sounded so fun. We had lunch here as it is right in the town square. We had a couple great local beers and really good burgers. The service was a little slow but they were quite busy. I would definitely recommend this place but I wouldn't be in a hurry. They stay very busy.

The Grand Cafe was founded in 1916 by the grand parents of the current owner. The expertise of almost 100 years hospitality makes this a unique place. The drive for best service and quality is the motivator to serve our guests. At a fair price we will welcome you and provide you with all the good things Gouda has to offer! For lunch, dinner, drinks and of course our world famous applepie we are opened 7 days a week. Looking foreward pampering you!
We made a Sunday day trip to the lovely little town of Gouda. Train tickets from Utrecht Central cost €13.60 return per person. It was very quiet when we arrived but around lunchtime it began to get a little busier. We stopped off for coffee and cake at the Grand Central Cafe to rest our weary legs. Two coffees and two cakes cost us €13.95. There was a brass band playing in the square.
Service with a smile.

Very nice restaurant in the heart of the City Center. The restaurant is upstairs, so don't be fooled if there is nobody in the small bar on the ground floor. The food is excellent, great flavours. Great choice of starters or enjoy them all in a big platter. Main courses we had a delicious duck and great catch of the day. Also great dishes. They have a very good winelist as well. Service is very attentive and friendly. After a nice coffee we asked for the check, which was also pleasant. Very much value for your money. I recommend this place!

I so enjoy the experience when I happen on an excellent place unexpectedly. This evening I was in Gouda wandering around enjoying the architecture when the heavens opened. I took shelter in a doorway. It was this restaurant. I smiled at the sign: "a meal without wine is called breakfast" and thought it my sort of place so went in even though it was early. The food is quite outstanding. I had the black ravioli. The service I experienced was excellent. It is not cheap but food this good should not be. It is an art form. I was not surprised to get home and find it is the top restaurant in Gouda.

My girlfriend and I had diner here (during 4 hours, which indicates the atmosphere of the restaurant). This is basically an entry level restaurant with brasserie pricing. They have two floors and are located just behind the town square and a five minute walk from a big parking garage.
We we sat down, we got a free bread basket with very good garlic butter and grain mustard. After that, a free amuse followed (also very good) and then our entree came: cheese soup and shelf full of local specialties. Very tasty, well prepared and to be recommended.
My girlfriend took the slice of thee mini hamburgers. She liked it, I thought they were average tasting. I ordered the special black burger (I forgot the name), which was way too spicy to be able to taste other things. I dismantled my burger and found that the homemade mayonnaise did it. I was glad when I had my meal finished, since it set my mouth and stomach on fire. I didn't enjoy it.
We ordered the nitrogen dessert, which was a sensation and very tasty. You could different sorts of food (fruit, bread and candy) and four dips: chocolate, vanille, something pink and nuts. And of course: the nitrogen. And then it's up to you to mix things :-)
All in all a very cosy, decent and friendly restaurant with very reasonable prices. Also good wines. Just don't take the specials things; stick with the traditional meals, they're really great!

Doppio Espresso Gouda is located in the historic heart of Gouda, a stone's throw from the famous Kaaswaag (cheese weighing house), the fifteenth-century town hall and opposite a medieval chapel, where we have a cozy and sun-drenched Terrace. We are there for coffee, breakfast, lunch, tea and more. How about daily fresh pastries from the best bakery in Gouda? Or a high tea? And of course we offer free power outlets and WiFi. Our passion for hospitality is our Mission to make your day a little nicer and tastier. Of course, our high-quality and qualitative products will certainly contribute to this.
Nice people in a great location. We ordered the 'tasting plate', thinking we would get, well, a mixture of tidbits to taste. It turned out to be a Sandwich cut into 4 pieces. It was OK, but not what we expected, so maybe it is...MoreHi Judy, Thank you for your feedback! Good to hear that you have enjoyed your stay and our coffee! We’ll look into your remark about the “tasting plate” might get renamed in future menus.... Hope to see you again!?

Good spot. Good menu with original choices and plenty of stuff from the region. Like the 'Rietvelder rund' meat which is extremely good beef. Nice atmosphere. Great service from staff that does know what it's all about. Reasonable prices. Here they really do know what the hospitality game is all about. Just a pitty that they do not have an outside Terrace. Will we be back? For sure!

The restaurant is decorated with kittchenware and with a country house atmosphere. We felt very confortable. They have high tables and regular ones. The concept is based on food to share. They use fresh products and the dishes are very well made. Presentation of the food is also really good.
You can ask food from the menu or you can go for the surprise menu. We were asked if we were allergic to something. We went for the six dishes menu. The portions were quite good and obviously everything was easy to share. They also have a good selection of wines in the wine list.
Desert was also good. And the service was excellent!!!
I definitelly recommend this restaurant!

Don't know why this restaurant is ranked at 1. Of course it's fresh and friendly staff as well. But the dishes are regular like everywhere in Europe when you eat Sushi. I had a salad and a fish soup as well. Prices are fair.
