Uspallata is a village, and an administrative district, in Argentina in a scenic location on the road which crosses the Andes between Mendoza and Santiago in Chile. It is located 100 km (62 mi) west of Mendoza and was once served by the now disused Transandine Railway which passed through the town on its way from Mendoza to Los Andes in Chile. There are several items of interest in and around the village including "las bovedas", somewhat strangely egg-shaped kilns dating from the early 17th century which were used to extract gold, silver, zinc, copper and other metals from minerals mined nearby. Worth a brief visit as they are only approx 1 1/2 km from town, complete with a small museum, notes include the fact that some of the refractory bricks can still be seen with "Rufford Stourbridge" from the English West Midlands stamped on them; a brief reminder of Britain´s industrial heritage. The road to the Chilean border incorporates some of the most dramatic scenery in the region, the Andean mountains in this part being part of the backdrop of the highest peak out of the ANDES, Aconcagua at almost 7,000 metres above sea level. There is a brief glimpse of the stunning mountain from the road some distance from another point of interest, an ochre coloured bridge spanning the Rio Mendoza 72 km from Uspallata that seems to have been made from sulphur-bearing hot springs.

We were on a guided tour of the Andes and Uspallata is about the only place to eat. But we were glad the tour selected El Rancho. It was a Sunday afternoon and the place was packed. A classic Parilla with the open fire grill right in the dining room. We had the assorted parilla for our lunch and it included. Started with a salad and then the meats - Beef ribs, steak, sausage, chicken and goat and intestines all piled high on the grill. Plus an order of French Fries. The steak was a little tough but everything else was delicious (ok we didn't eat the intestines).

After being totally ignored at El Rancho, we crossed the street and went to this restaurant. They pretty much ignored us as well. Didn't greet. Didn't bring menus. Didn't treat us as their customers. Three Argentine ladies next to us were about to leave and came up to us and said: "Ignorant waiters, bad food, don't eat here".

The short and ugly:
For the record anybody taking a bus over the Andes has
misplaced information or simply is a dumb tourist reflected by
the negative, fussy review below. Three or four hours in bus stop
at customs (all buses seemingly) would make me mad but mad
at myself for making the dumb travel arrangement.
Don't buses stop at buffets and Denny's?
The long on good:
This is a favourite stop for our private driver who cautioned
us that he will not take fussy tourists here.
Why? Read first paragraph on ugly please!
The truthful best:
Our steaks were perfect. The goat great. Chorrizo fantastic!
Everything except bread (olives, pickled onions) comes
form their own kitchen.
The french fries hand cut to perfect ... check the photo.
The washroom bowels and urinals were clean.
Yes the mop and a few rags were left in view.
It was sufficient and adequate on a third world level.
Have people every traveled business class on a
third world airline and watched washroom deterioration?
Yes, American bathrooms trump the world!
The restaurant was 'ranch style country' eating.
Wonderful classic and interesting decor ... wine list
was super.

A classic stop in your way to Chile, this local restaurant offers the option of either sit and eat, buy something from the grocery, grab some already cooked meals or buy some souvenirs from a very large selection of regional products. The portions are not that big and the food seemed reheated. We pick up some empanadas to go as well and they were very small and not properly filled. Prices are high and quality is no good but with the lack of choices down the road, lots of people make the mistake of stopping here. The only thing good about this place its the possibility of buying some regional products but besides that I would totally avoid this restaurant.

Uspallata seems like a busy little town getting its fair share of the visitors from the passers-by going to or coming from Chile or the Aconcagua park. Therefore a lot of the places tend to be rather touristy. Casita Suiza is no different but it's not necessarily a bad thing. Coffee is great here, pastries fresh and cheap and they also serve different cakes that look huge and delicious. Nice spot!

We asked our driver to take us to a restaurant that the locals use and he took us here. It was excellent. We had steak sandwiches which were well cooked and tender. He also brought out snacks to start and the chimichurri was great. The staff were very friendly and helpful. A great atmosphere. We'd definitely recommend it.
