Sittingbourne is an industrial town situated in the Swale district of Kent in south east England, 17 miles (27 km) from Canterbury and 45 miles (72 km) from London. The town sits beside the Roman Watling Street, an ancient British trackway used by the Romans and the Anglo-Saxons and next to the Swale, a strip of sea separating mainland Kent from the Isle of Sheppey. The town became prominent after the death of Thomas Becket in 1170, since it provided a convenient resting point on the road from London to Canterbury and Dover.

Lakes is the restaurant of Hempstead House, a small family-owned country house hotel between Sittingbourne and Faversham in the glorious Kent countryside. It dates back to 1850 but Lakes restaurant was added in 1998, quickly winning awards from the AA, the RAC and the English Tourist Board. Its crystal chandeliers, fine China and cut glass provide an elegant backdrop to the interpretation of classical English and French dishes: fresh fish and meat is locally-sourced and fruit and veg come down from Covent Garden each day.
I was so surprised at how poor the food was in this restaurant, especially as the setting is so nice. None of the food had much flavour and none of it was seasoned properly. The cauliflower soup was in fact a purée, with practically no flavour. My chicken Wellington was served in raw pastry and filled with mined chicken which wasn't a great experience. After waiting 40 for the tarte tatin at least that had some flavour but was the size of a two pound coin. I would have got more flavour from a school dinner and would certainly not have paid those prices for it! I would never eat here again.

Went here on chance with a colleague after a long day. The owner was lovely, very friendly, came from Bangladesh 35 years ago. Was more than happy for me to order two meals that were not on the menu, as I have eaten extensively in the Indian Subcontinent, and the chef did not disappoint. I highly recommend this place.

Empress of India has been established since 1993. It is the second longest running restaurant in Sittingbourne. We can occupy large groups of parties for Birthdays to even Wedding receptions. We have a large selection of wines, cocktails. We also provide vegetarian dishes and also have an English menu. We also do take-away service for collections only.
Took the family out on a Friday night, early. Service was good and staff very helpful and pleasant however the food was very mediocre. What was rated as two chilli's barely rated one and the green chill's I did have were like spicy green beans. Was this because of the weekend? It certainly should not be.......
Wish we had gone to Lateef around the corner and we will not be using the Empress again.

Stopped by here after a brisk walk alongside the creek. What a gorgeous little pub
Just wishing to have a snack, I chose a beef and horseradish roll ( homemade granary roll ). I didn't realise until it came up, that it had a few chips and coleslaw garnish. It was delicious.
The Ship Inn is well off the beaten track but I will definitely return next time I'm in the area

A listed coaching inn set in the heart of the Kent countryside. The Chequers oozes history and charm with its oak timbers, mullion windows and inglenook fireplace. A fine selection of real ales and wines. The home cooked food is excellent, locally sourced and good value for money. There is a large outside Seating area, with a family garden to the rear. The Chequers has recently been refurbished and we look forward to welcoming you. Open: Monday 5-11. (No food) Tue-fri 12-3 5-11(Food 12-2.30 and 6-9) Saturday 12-11 (Food until 9) Sunday. 12-8 (Food until 6)
We go walking around Kent and eat in pubs at least twice a week. I have to say that our lunch on Sunday was absolutely superb and exceedingly great value. The chocolate brownie was to die for. Beef and veg were divine too. I will be coming back.

Stopped here on our way home for an impromptu lunch. Have eaten here several times & it never disappoints. Food is always piping hot. Menu has something for everyone. We had rock & chips and a veggieburger. All very tasty. Nice side salad. Couldn’t manage a dessert this time.

We have eaten here many times before, and enjoyed a spontaneous dinner here yesterday being a snowy day, there’s no better place to go than in the local pub and muse at the snow.
Friendly staff. Good atmosphere buzzing with friendly locals.Rustic and warm.
Had the chicken with black pudding and pistachio stuffing on kale and sweet potato, oh my what a delight, it tasted superb and presented beautifully, good size portion.
Husband had the sausage ciabatta, went down a treat. Just perfect.
We have never had a bad meal here, all the staff work hard and are always busy yet give you the time of day to say hello and smile and make you welcome every time.
We love this place.
Will be back soon as noticed a few new things to try on the menu.

We have tried many times to get a table at the Tudor Rose but always left it to late, but this time our friends booked a table a few weeks in advance and we were in...
This is a lovely pub which i can only assume that there main income is the food as the place is always packed and the food very good.
We came here for Sunday Lunch and the food was excellent and the service very attentive with joyful staff.
We only wish that we had visited sooner.

Traditional English pub dating back to 1654 with a luxurious country feel. Real fireplaces throughout. Unique interiors, freehouse. Real ales, cask beers, excellent wines. The food is locally sourced, regularly updated and delicious. A stunning private dining room available for all special occasions. A real find.
