We arrived in Portarlington on a Sunday afternoon after a local lunch that went on a bit ....
Still looking for a decent but simple meal we opted for the bistro in the Grand Hotel. We both went for the burger and accompanying beverage.
Let me say the taste of the burger was awesome, but maybe just a bit too much for the bun it came on - just a bit too much to deal with as a hands on burger challenge.
We had a good time, as I said the taste of the food was great.

Bistro open to public daily for lunch and dinner
Portarlington golf club, I was warned about this place... don’t expect much. Walking in, this place was pretty busy. Great layout, decor simple but modern, clean, lots of people enjoying their food and lots of big groups, like ourselves.
Great variety on the menu and reasonably priced. Put it this way, for a group of 11 people ordering entrees and mains the bill came in just over $200! Waitress took our order and we had to pay at the spot. Unlike other hotels paying at a counter, the counter comes to you with an eftpos machine.
The service was attentive and friendly. They were absolutely great. No fault whatsoever.
Entrees came out, we had the salt and pepper calamari.... this dish certainly came out of a frozen box. Everyone on the table who tried it said the same thing. They were very dry, over fried and disgusting.
Then came the mains, I had the grilled barramundi. Hmmm.... I am unsure how else to describe this dish than bland and boring which is surprising given barramundi is a beautiful fish. The sauce on the side was disgusting, we couldn’t make out what it was, tartar sauce, pesto, aioli?? Everyone who had the fish weather it was the barramundi or the blue grandeur asked the same thing. Served with A few chips on the side and salad. It was disappointing but then again I was warned.
Afterwards we had the sticky date pudding and this was delicious!!! Soft, moist and warm. Beautiful. A large serve with enough for two people.
This place has a beautiful set up, busy, great prices but the food was a huge letdown. This is why I am rating this place poor.
I would love to come again, it caters perfectly for large groups.
I would suggest management and the chef to sit down and try the foods they are serving because something is definitely wrong. Not one person on our table of 11 people enjoyed their meal. And Reading the recent reviews, there are many who would agree.

We only had Takeaway on this occasion - but the restaurant is well appointed and has a lovely feel - it's located in a lovely old building on the main street with beautiful big windows looking out over the park and the bay. The food is fantastic with a really good selection.

We had a wonderful lunch here with a view of the sea......the food was excellent, as where the wines and the service. Very friendly staff and a spacious area. The serves are very generous! but we managed. The entree of mushroom and goat cheese tart was a winner, the fish was cooked to perfection and the salads and potatoes perfection.....next time we will make room for the yummy looking dessert menu! We actually booked and would recommend doing so on a weekend.

This is a small lounge bar/restaurant/live venue at the end of the main street in Portarlington, Victoria, Australia.
We had a delightful family dinner for 7. All our meals were delicious and substantial. The chips were soft in the middle with tasty, crispy outers and ends - just the way I like them. We were served efficiently and courteously. Our drinks were served promptly and with lovely smiles. Really quirky decor added up to a great atmosphere. The band for the evening was The Tram Wreck and they had a great sound and were pretty good entertainers too. I did need earplugs though and once they started we couldn't hear each other to talk so we did leave to go have a walk along the pier and get some ice cream and lollies from the lolly shop. A great birthday treat.

We were out for a winter afternoon drive around the Bellarine Peninsula and chanced upon this cute little place overlooking the water in Portarlington. It was around 3pm and the lunch crowd was just finishing up. We got exactly what we needed - a beautiful piece of chocolate cake with excellent coffee. The food around the place looked and smelt good enough for a longer visit in the future. Good friendly staff too. We'll be back.

Ordered hamburger with the lot, scallops, dim sims, flake, potato cakes & chips. The chips were soggy, the dim sims were some weird fine mince (like nothing I've seen before), the scallops were bland, the hamburger was ok, but not memorable, the potato cakes were good... Fish and Chips are not cheap these days either - $40 bill.. 6 out of 10... Wont be heading back...

Do not under any circumstances eat at this restraunt it was by far the worst pizza I've ever had in my life! Very dry tasteless toppings very little cheese and the base was rubbish! Even the garlic bread was horrible! Over priced poor service and wasn't punctual on the time they said it would be ready either!

I've enjoyed good food at the Portarlington Bakehouse in the past, and looked forward to revisiting today. Boy, was I disappointed.
Chalkboard sign says "Bakery closed for renovations". Focaccias, salad rolls, toasties etc in the refrigerated cabinet looked fresh and appetising. Cakes, slices etc looked like they had been delivered by the PFD truck from a factory somewhere. Nothing looked 'home-baked', which is why you come to a bakery in the first place. If I just wanted an ordinary little cake I could go round the corner to Woolworths supermarket.
I ordered fruit toast and flat white. Coffee good, fruit toast awful.
No way I'd go back to Portarlington Bakehouse in a hurry. There's too much competition elsewhere on the Bellarine to put up with mediocre food, particularly when it all looks factory-made.
