The Showaken is a typical Japanese neighbourhood Tonkatsu restaurant. It has a retro feel to it and could be used as a location for some tv drama set in the Sixties and Seventies- the Showa Era-hence the name.
The emphasis here is on locals and the food is hearty, generous, and economical. This is not a gourmet restaurant but a place to "scarfe" up a meal. The Showa Ken definitely delivers what they promise, a generous portion of deep fried crumbed pork cutlet on a bed of rice with a large dose of Tonkatsu sauce, a small green salad and some pickles with a small bowl of Miso soup all for jpy880.00 , your typical Tonkatsu Don.(Bowl)
There is also a Chicken Katsu Don an alternative to the Katsu Don.
Should you want to go a bit more upmarket,
you might try the Fillet Katsu Plate, I might go back to try this some other time.
I felt like I was in some time warp here and actually felt quite comfortable eating my gi-normous helping of Ton Katsu Don.

Getting off the bus, we headed straight for this restaurant. The soba was freshly made by the chef and totally delicious. Unagi was grilled perfectly. Sweetfish took a little longer but it came out and tasted very good.

He don’t know squat about ramen. I’ll give this place 5 stars because it’s good, better than all but 1 in Hakuba. And, being totally different that Tottsuan, a nice option in a great atmosphere.
Adding to the cozy ambiance is the prison guard-like character of the lady waiting on you. No welcome greeting, no pleasantries... she’s probably only in her 30s but has the presence of an octogenarian suffering from angry-type Alzheimer’s.
Highly recommend the hot and sour broth ramen. “Suu Kara Aji Soba”
GF liked the leek and black pepper. “Negi Ramen”

I really don't want to share the information...because of really great cafe!
They serve great cafe and cake. The coffee is roasted there and hand dripping. Cake is big (for me :-) and delicious!! Especially, Apple Pipe might be breaking your thought. I recommend strongly (CAUTION: Apple Pipe is seasonal cake. You need to check the availability before visiting if you want to eat it.) It's so hard to access there without a car. Especially, in winter, the car should be 4WD / AWD because the approach is steep gradient.

Everything I've had here is to a superior standard as compared to Chinese places in Hakuba.
Special mention goes to the
Gyoza (Plump and juicy)
Suu Buta (maybe sweet and sour pork in English?, Anyway they use pork belly which makes it extra luxurious)
Fried rice is super good and I normally don't like that
Cashew nut chicken is really nice

The noodles (soba) are home made. The lady was making some during our meal! Really nice to see! And it was delicious and the people are very welcoming ! The view is beautiful!! I recommend!

I came across this establishment actually in October 2013, and again in October 2012 for the Omachi Alps Marathon. I arrived the day before the race and was walking around near the hotel and train station.
There was a long road with restaurants, and shops along both sides but most shops were closed down and looked a bit worn down. Wachigai looked old but in a nice wabi-sabi way - not like left to entropy but was clean, well maintained and open for business around 11 am.
They serve local Japanese dishes and sake - something light before race day so I went in and was shown to a big tatami room with low table and it was all for myself. Ozanza noodles is one of their local specialties. After ordering, I looked around and there are several private rooms for group dining, and a garden looking out the room. Inside, is another garden with trees in the center - overall, it looked very relaxing and quiet.
There weren't a lot of customers (to be fair the whole place around Shinano Omachi station looked deserted) for Saturday lunch time, but it's a very relaxing place to eat a local cuisine and I hope more people go visit it and enjoy good japanese food!

We loved the cosy atmosphere of this chalet typ restaurant. The mains (good value) were great but it was the mexican style appetizer that brought us back a second time during our 5 days stay in Omachi. The menu is available in english and the friendly owner is always up for a chat.

Hungry box Yuko is situated in Ohmachi
Meitangai a retro arcade where the clock stopped in 1963.
The proprietors speak only Japanese but that’s not a problem for me.
They’re open for lunch also and there is a food sample display outside this restaurant so you can always point to what you want to eat. Open to 8 pm so get in early. I had a eggplant and tomato in bacon and tomato sauce pasta and it was very tasty with a lettuce and grated Japanese radish and lettuce salad with sesame dressing. My partner had a clam spaghetti with chilli in a broth which was a kind of Italian Ramen.
The menu has a home cooking feel to it and as it is a Mom and Pop establishment there is a kind of comforting feel about the place.
We’ll be back.
