Breaded pork cutlets in a thick sauce, on a bed of rice, and with a miso soup accompaniment - recommended! This is a local speciality, and very reasonably priced.
What is slightly weird, to this westerner 's eyes, is that you order from a machine at the entrance and pay there, in advance, too. The dish I just described was 800 or 900 yen, depending on whether you wanted no fat at all on your cutlet.
The restaurant was recommended on the Lonely planet guide and it was a good recommendation in this case - I didn't check trip advisor on this one!
Rustic and cheap!

We ate in this small, welcoming restaurant 2 nights out of the 3 we had in Okayama. The 2 set menus are a bargain compared to other places we ate. The JPY3500 one has some selected appetisers, salad, seafood, Wagyu beef, octopus dumplings and dessert. (There was probably also rice and miso soup.) If you sit at the bar, where most seats are, you will see your meal being cooked before your eyes.
The small team - looks like family owned - are very welcoming, happy to speak English and very charming. They have an english menu too. Be sure to book.

We love (cooked) oysters, so walked here easily from our hotel near the station. Clues: it is on the main street, has 5 small lanterns out front and locals know it as Mori, the chef's name. Although there's no English sign, the phone number is visible on the awning, so you can recognize that. It's a little place, just 3 tables western style plus more Japanese low tables. If oysters (kaki) are in season (fall and winter), order the kaki-oko from the smiling waitress, who will also bring an English menu. You can watch Mori cook it at his grill.
We had our hotel call ahead to make sure they had the oysters.
We paid 980 yen each for kakioko, plus 550 for 1 beer. When we left, Mori followed us out to take photos of us with our camera. A very friendly place!

故郷の岡山市のお土産は大手饅頭が定番です。
薄い皮の中にぎっしりと小豆餡が入っています。

My partner and I had the gyoza, the siromaru special (basic pork broth, with extras: seaweed, bean sprouts, extra pork, an egg), and the akamaru special (the same, but slightly spicy).
It all went in several minutes of silence. Pure oishi ("tasty").
It's cheap, too!
(Note: they have a menu in English)

岡山駅の高島屋、すぐ近く
As other reviewers have noted, this is a soy sauce based ramen which just happens to be my favourite. Hisio is a clean modern establishment with English menus and friendly staff. Service is fast and if possible, avoid between 12:00 and 13:00 as you sometimes have to line up.
For fans of spicy dishes, order the "Hisio Red" ramen which is loaded with togarashi (Japanese chilli spice) which gives the soup a fiery red colour. Hisio also offers unlimited refills of noodles. Literally as much as you'd like. Just ask the staff for "kaedama" and they'll bring you another plate of noodles. Just make sure you leave some soup because the refills are just noodles, not the soup.
My favourite ramen restaurant in Japan. Located just a few hundred metres from Okayama Station and also located in AEON Mall which is a 5 to 10 minute walk from the same station.

Love the bara zushi! A must order. This a no frills restaurant located just beside the train station. It's part of the underground connections to Hotel Gran Via. There was a queue outside the restaurant but you can opt to buy takeaway which was more affordable. We chose to dine in as we were having lunch. Nice basic sushi with good rice.

Arrived at the station hungry in mid-afternoon and were pleased to find this place. My wife has a thing for fried pork cutlets so she was delighted.
They served us quickly and well, even offering an English menu. We are used to restaurants that specialise in pork cutlets, but this place has all kinds of things wrapped in batter and deep-fried. In the end I was the one who had the pork and my wife had a mixture of chicken, oysters, vegetables and other good things. Very welcome, very tasty. A choice of rices, a dish of miso soup, raw cabbage with dressing. We certainly didn't leave hungry.
Good stuff. Decent price. Helpful staff.
