Chef Martin Pritz follows in the footsteps of his mother who has become famous for her down-to-earth approach to cooking regional specialties. Today guests come from near and far to indulge in culinary delights at the "Schwarzen Baeren." Although Martin emphasizes family tradition, he continues to make excursions into the new world of lighter, more creative cuisine, enriched by his particular interest and expertise in fish and game.
the schwarze baer is ultra welcoming and inviting. the beautiful decoration in local austrian charm and the very friendly owners and staff make you feel at home instantly. we had a very lovely lunch and some good coffee. it was not the best food i had while in Austria, my asparagus was very overcooked, but i enjoyed my visit none the less to the fullest. my husband had a deer schnitzel with pine nuts and almonds, which was delicious. the best thing was that we got to chat with the owner, mrs pritz. she had some interesting local stories to tell and made us feel as though we already belonged to the family. this is what makes this area one of the best in europe. Austria is very friendly!!!
and if the weather is nice you have to sit outside at the schwarze baer and have a nice coffee with the outstanding marillen knoed'l (apricot dumpling).........sooooo worth it!!
i will be back!

Both hotel and restaurant were great. Friendly service, good room, and excellent food. Restaurant seems to be popular with locals which is always a good sign.

Sitting outside but in the shade under a perfectly blur sunny sky at comfortable temperature was great! Food was good, not the very best food I've ever tasted and I know there are better Austrian restaurants in the City of Vienna. Yet, this food was definitely good (wouldn't say terrific, nothing fancy, no surprises, nothing making it anything really special). Pasta was a little bit overcooked. Portio nsize was good. Staff was friendly and fast, but the place was very touristy and crowded. Worth going there for a casual lunch, wouldn't do dinner there.

A typicall winetavern
For those travelers in a hurry or not able to search around for other Heuriger inns, this is a good and easy example of this variety of restaurant to try.
For those not familiar with Heuriger, these are inns attached to a vineyard in which the proprietor offers light meals and his wine. Guests often sit at tables with other guests as space is limited.
It offers ample parking and is located along the main road outside the village of Emmersdorf, which make it easy to stop and enjoy a meal.
I have included some photos of the menu, as this provides a better idea of what is offered and at what price. On both occasions we were there it seemed well frequented by both locals and tourists alike.
It can get very busy, so to be sure reserve some table space ahead of time.

A cafe/restaurant right in the City Centre. We only had a coffee but others around us appeared to be enjoying their food. Quick service but the town was quiet on our visit.

Dieses Gasthaus liegt am Fuße der berühmten Schallaburg, und wird häufig auch von deren Besucher aufgesucht. Neben diesen Personenkreis, sind natürlich auch viele Stammgäste aus der Umgebung dort.

This visit was very disappointing from the time it took to get our food to how it tasted. And there is no non-smoking section, which was unfortunate. We were in this restaurant on a Saturday evening pre-season so it was almost empty. In fact, we were the only ones at the time ordering food, yet it took quite a while to get it. (We did receive the drinks quickly.)
To their credit, the green garlic soup was very good. However, the Winzer-Brot was not good and the so-called souffle (they spell it souflet, but some research suggests it refers to the same thing, supposedly) was definitely not a souffle.
The pieces on the Winzer-Brot Sandwich fell apart, more importantly, the oregano completely overwhelmed the taste. Using something like parsley would make much more sense for that kind of a warm Sandwich. The souffle was a huge disappointment. It was a small piece of chocolate cake (almost like a small muffin) with barely a hint of nut flavor and nothing resembling an actual souffle. The only moist-resembling component was chocolate sauce on the plate. There wasn't any actual moist part to the piece, which is what one expects from a souffle. I hope the restaurant renames this dessert to reflect what it is.
Overall, I wish I could have a do-over on my one dinner experience in Melk. I suggest you look for something else.

Rustic atmosphere, expected a crowd later but we were early. The advisory it will be peoples' favorite this could mean favorite and good restaurant.
True enough per serving was large. too much for me.so we ordered one schnitzel and one order from the other menu.
That was very good. Sumptuous dinner.

This is a small local restaurant and their entire menu was local food and it is delicious. Also, the prices are very reasonable. The sauerkraut was the best ever and the potato salad looked good. Our only complaint was the service which, initially, was quite slow and was somewhat surly.
