The picturesque town of Mechelen, a hidden Flemish gem, sits between Brussels and Antwerp. Students of the world-renowned Carillon bell-ringing school provide an atmospheric soundtrack for sipping coffee at a sidewalk café in one of the town's charming squares. Many pedestrian areas make this a delightful town to promenade about, admiring hundreds of listed buildings and monuments, many dating back to 16th century. Highlights include Gothic and Baroque churches and the famed St Rumbold's Tower.

Brasserie Het Anker guarantees a unique taste experience. You will find delicious dishes with matching beers, of which some dishes are also prepared with beer. De initely try the Flemish beef stew and the Mechelen Cuckoo with Gouden Carolus. The beers are available in bottles and on draught. The brasserie is open every day from 10am, the kitchen from 11.30am. Step by and enjoy your meal.
We had generous and delicious helpings of carbonnade flamande here, washed down with Gouden Carolus Cuvee van de Kaiser whisky infused van 't vat (on draught). You can't get a better Flemish lunch than that. You really can't. Lovely surroundings and friendly, prompt and attentive service. Het Anker, its brewery, its hotel and its cafe really flies the flag for Mechelen.

'il dolce' in Mechelen!! What do you do if you're looking for a superb italian restaurant, nearby, (family) friendly and still affordable ? Came here first time ever to celebrate my girlfriend's birthday together with the kids, still wondering how come we didn't discover LV earlier! Started off a romantic evening with a memorable Lambrusco, got it rolling with tuna carpaccio and culatello (top!), subsequently enjoyed some great, fresh Dorade for her and ossobuco alla milanese for himmmmmh!!! Juiced it all up with a deliciously fresh San Gimignano!
Taste this diamant housed discretely in a noisy street nearby the train station. I have, and will come back here for sure!! Promised the same to the enjoyable staff too!

The waiter and chef collaborated to whip up a couple of tegines that were quite tasty even though we showed up minutes before their closing time (on an otherwise slow evening).

Wine bar
Great place if you like to enjoy wine. It is not a restaurant but you can get there nice snacks/tapas to accompany the wine. The selection of wines is very good an sometimes a bit surprising. regularly you will find new selection and wines. The nice thing is that you can also buy the bottle of wine to bring home. In fact it is also a wine shop. Great to discover new delights!

I tried Nino's as recommended by Tripadvisor :) It is a cosy, jazzy place with a very nice menu card. The veal plate tasted very good, juicy as it should and is a plate I would recommend. Nino's also has a great selection of Italian wines, something the chef is very proud on. The prices for the wine are on the high side though. In general I would rate this restaurant as good to very good. But five stars is overrated.

Via via is located in a modernised historical building in the botanical garden of Mechelen. I summer this provides the extra pleasure of eating on the Terrace with view on the park. The food selection is creatively sourced with ideas and ingredients from all corners of the world. Management is present and very friendly. The quality of the food is amazing and prepared promptly.

Real deal Irish Pub multiple draught beers, good trad Irish food, good craic & atmosphere, live sports (sky) on big screen. A wee bit of Ireland in the centre of Mechelen. Specialties "Fish & Chips" & Gourmet Burgers...food served 18-21 every day except Mondays our closing day. Sunday no kitchen..
Ordered a chicken burger which was raw. When the waitress finally came around to ask how everything was I told her it was raw. She apologized and brought out the check and still charged for the raw chicken.

Sava Mechelen is a local pub and Spanish Tapasbar. All tapas are freshly prepared. The pub is open from 9 am until at least midnight (in weekends later). A selection of tapas is available all day. Known for its nice wines and cava by the glass and a variety of local beers on draught. Credit cards accepted. Reservations are welcome, by phone or e-mail.
Hard to believe but this restaurant serves the best and most authentic Spanish tapas outside of Barcelona. The Jamon Serrano and Manchego are simply superb but so are the warm tapas dishes.
The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. If the weather cooperates, try the outdoor Seating so you can enjoy the pedestrian traffic and the beauty of the "Grote Markt" while savoring your food.
Highly recommended for quality, service and atmosphere!!!

A bizarre experience whereby we were unable to order what we wished to eat. A colleague had recommended to order all the steak sauces and share them amongst us as they are apparently really good and all deserve to be tasted. The waiter refused to do this because certain steaks should only be eaten with certain sauces. Two colleagues wished to have chips with their beef Wellington, but this was not allowed as it would upset the chef. Then we ordered wine; the waiter forgot to bring it - no problem, it happens. But, when we asked for it he got quite emotional, and started arguing about it not having been ordered. Overall, unnecessarily stressy service that took the edge off the dining experience. The entrecotes were okay, not outstanding. The recipients of the Wellington were happy, but not ecstatic. In a town with very many excellent steak restaurants, this one is okay, expensive, but not high on the list for a repeat visit. Which is a shame.
