The setting is picture postcard perfect overlooking the lake and castle. The back garden area is huge and full of comfy seats and loungers. It even has a huge sandpit in the shape of a wee boat and loads of kids toys. There are also huge heaters to keep revelers warm on cooler nights - it was roasting when we went. My wine was average price for Mariefred but it tasted very cheap. The food was average. The Swedish pancakes for our wee one were overdone and the cream was so watery it looked like it had been in a pot in the heat all day. The setting makes this place....but pls pay better attention to quality.

The best part about Riddarn Restaurant is the big outdoor dining area behind the restaurant. It's really a pub, and the menu reflects that. We were only there for lunch, and like most Swedish restaurants, they have a "daily lunch" that consists of a few options (though you had more choices here than most) that are pretty standard fare. Like most pubs, you order at the bar, no table service except to bring your food to you.
We opted for a Gyros platter which didn't resemble any gyros platter I've had before, except that there were fries with it and a white sauce, but the meat was flavorful and well seasoned. The patio is pretty standard Swedish-style wood with umbrellas to shade you from the sun, no decoration or anything, but is nice to sit outside on a sunny day and there are only a couple places in Mariefried where you can do that. There is also a private parking lot, unlike most places in town, so that is convenient.

Picture your typical Swedish café, in a tiny room (there's six tables!) in an old, I'd guess 19th century, house on one of the two main streets in the tiny village of Mariefred, near Gripsholm Castle. We were there in March, a quiet Easter Sunday. Now in summer, I'd imagine this place being packed, but when we were there, only two tables were occupied, plus two on the outside, with people enjoying the spring sun.
The coffee is simple Swedish brew, but strong. It's the sandwiches we'll remember: HUGE, and well decorated. The shrimp and meatball sandwiches were really delicious, and the atmosphere in the place very friendly and familiar. I guess the cakes were as good as they looked. My son devoured his muffin in one go... ;)
As always in Sweden, it's self-service (!) so don't expect anyone to come to your table to serve you.

We were aiming for Gripsholms Värdshus but not tempted by their lunch of the day, so we found this little restaurant in main street. I had veal with pepper sauce, tender and perectly cooked to my taste, and my wife certainly enjoyed her grilled grilled filet of trout. But what made our experience stand out was the sallad bar included in the lunch price. So many choices and everything fresh and tasty. Small dishes you would normally find only in a Greek restaurant. We just loved it.

This is a great place for a quick bite in the small picturesque village of Mariefred. They have expanded and improved the menu the last few years and there's something for everyone, from sandwiches to pizza to coffee, interesting teas and goodies. Definitely worth a lunch time stop.

Annas Hembageri bake rich and good bread mainly with sourdough, and some pastries. Everything is baked in the oven with the stone slab where the bread gets a thick and tasty crust. The ingredients are mostly organic and locally produced. Annas Hembageri was named the best café in Sweden in the White Guide Café 2016/17.
Highly ranked in "Sweden's best cafes", The former placement in the village has now closed, so now Anna's rural design in the picturesque Marifred, makes it more comfortable for residents but not as cozy for tourists. However, the range of goodies is the same and it is easy to get enthusiastic. However, prices begin to approach Stockholm level

Me and my wife have been coming here for a couple of years now and I have wanted to do a rewiew on tripsadvisor for a long time but Skottvångs Gruva haven´t been on the map so to say:)
But now I have the chance to air my opinion and it´s all in favour of this place!
Good food, very nice service, cosy setting in the middle of nowhere: who can ask for more?
It´s a bit out of the way but you´ll be richly rewarded when you sit down and eat.
Go there, you wont regret it!

Had Saturday late lunch at Slottspaviljongen after the guided tour at Gripsholm castle which made us really hungry! Especially the steamed cod was so delicious, perhaps one of the best cooked fish dishes I've ever had! You pay at the cashier and then they bring out the food. Effective but not exactly glamorous. Mind that this allows you to leave when you are ready, instead of waiting to get the check. Very good.
Quite busy with lots of other tourists and people in a long queue can cause a bit of a stressful atmosphere. However, we found a quiet table and were very pleased with both food, service and the price.

Dropped in twice now for coffee. Boys had chocolate cake ( 'really, really, really good'. We had lattes and little mini muffins with cream fillings. Quite pricy which is all that stops them getting 5*.
