First castle built in 1380s. The current building was begun in 1537 by Vasa. The building incorporates the national portrait gallery which contains 4000 items.
The building and grounds are extensive. An incredible restoration worth your time.

Visited taxinge slott for some lunch with family. The cafe was busy but the queue moving. The till seems to be in the wrong place, leading to confusion especially if ordering hot food and having to collect it after paying.
That said sandwiches were tasty and filling and cakes were lovely.
The grounds are something else, just beautiful.
The shops in the grounds are quaint and have a good choice of goods.

For foreign tourists, it's a shame the title of this attraction isn't 'Narrow-guage steam train' because most of us would have no idea what Ostra Sodermanlands Jarnvag means. During the summer months a bunch of volunteers operate this excellent little train which takes you on a two hour round trip from Mariefred to Taxinge Nasby. The round trip left Mariefred at 10.00am and the cost was about 120SEK per person. Lots of fun and very well organised.

After a lovely weekend with friends in Stockholm, we needed to return to Mariefred on the Sunday. We caught the 10:30 departure, having reserved a table in the restaurant a few days earlier. After leaving Stockholm and an hour's steaming through exquisite Lake Mälaren scenery, the restaurant opened at 12:00.
Service was prompt, the short menu interesting, and the food was fine. A great way to spend a Sunday lunchtime.

When at the ruins on the hill overlooking town, you can almost imagine the original structure and the processions that took place to come here and worship. A fair amount of the original structure is standing, and you can clearly see three sections to the old church. Worth a visit for history buffs, or just for the kids to run up and down the hill!

This is a 1700s farm with a main building and annexes with weaving, studio and workshop.
We were in Mariefred for a tour stop and I spotted this marvelous looking site while walking around town, it is very near the center and the harbor. During the summer there are evidently various craft stalls.
In addition there is the Callanderska Garden, which I was able to get nice views of over the picket fence ... nice plantings, trees, and sheds. It looks like a peaceful place to wander and spend time.
It was not open on when I was there in May of 2016, and the museum is open from Midsummer until the third weekend of August, and during Saturday-Sunday in the month of June at 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
