All former reviews of Baderhaus do not apply any more since everything has changed in the meantime. The former host (i.e. the “Kaiser”) is gone. He has opened a new restaurant in neighboring Kapfenberg, named “K.u.K. Restaurant Zum Kaiser Franz Joseph”, where he still dresses up as the emperor. Who is fond of traditional Viennese cuisine has to go there and might be deceived at Baderhaus.
The current restaurant at Baderhaus is officially named “Weinerei im Baderhaus”. Although this name means wine bar in English, this place is still a full-blown restaurant as can be gathered from its menu. The latter is not comprehensive, but offers enough choice except for Vegetarians. From Tuesday to Friday a simple, mostly rustic dish of the day is available for very little money. Apart from that prices correspond to the average level of restaurants of this standing in the area. Cuisine is now rather international than Austrian.
The interior of Baderhaus has been modified a little because the imperial decoration was also moved to Kapfenberg. But the bare brick walls have remained as they were and still create a pleasant atmosphere. The outside Seating, spread over different levels, is perfect: separated from the river only by a street of almost no traffic.
I came to “Weinerei im Baderhaus” for a late lunch. At that time service was provided by only one person, probably the head of the restaurant. Despite the limited number of guests present, he had difficulties to cope with the situation. So, service was rather sluggish. On the other hand, preparation of my lunch was quite fast even in view of the fact that I had opted for the dish of the day.
My fish platter was pleasing to the eye, but did not fully satisfy the palate. While I liked the fried salmon fillet this was not at all the case for the fillet of the second kind of fish because it was dry and lacked flavor. The rice was overcooked to such an extent that it started to degenerate into a sticky tasteless paste. The accompanying leaf salad, however, was well dressed.

Went there with familiy. Best backhendel in upper styria. Good Value. Must order vogerlsalat with backhendel.

This old castle is in a beautiful location in the middle of the Mountains, with a breathtaking view over the nearby Valleys. While it retains its original medieval charme from the outside, the renovations of the inside (to turn it into a restaurant and a banqueting hall) were more functional than respectful of the venue's past. The elevator makes the venue accessible (and it served well its purposed with the elderly guests of the wedding party we attended), but the bars made the inside look like any Austrian gasthof and broke the enchantment of the evening.
Not to miss - the view from the top and the large array of birds of prey for falconry shows.

While visiting the beautiful town of Bruck an der Mur we chose to eat at Riegler's after a number of locals suggested this as a good centrally located restaurant.
We were not disappointed. The restaurant offers a nice range of typical and traditional Austrian dishes known as "Hausmannskost". Friendly and attentive English speaking staff, for those guests that do not speak German.

When we had lunch at Papa Joe's on a Friday we enjoyed the calm and relaxed atmosphere since there were hardly a dozen guests in the restaurant at that time. This may be different in the evening because the colorful, deliberately chaotic decoration and the nice bar scene promise that this attractive place will be busier then.
We only saw a single waiter on duty who was friendly, competent and efficient. He never kept us waiting. So, immediately after having taken a seat we already received the menus. Both their design and the dishes that they comprise are equally creative as the styling of this restaurant. In addition to the permanent menu, at lunchtime also two or three dishes of the day are available. Immediately after having finished the soup, the main courses arrived, including one that had been chosen from the permanent menu. Thus, not only the waiter but also the cook was speedy.
All the dishes were tasty and spicy, but nonetheless not too hot. Papa Joe's cook seems to be a specialist in preparing meat, all kinds of which turned out to be tender and juicy. The prices of the dishes correspond to the common price level of decent restaurants in town. Only steaks may be an exception in this respect. Who is fond of a full sized steak should order it at Papa Joe's. You will not get a comparable steak for such a competitive price anywhere else in this area.

This restaurant is located in one of the most unsightly fringes of Kapfenberg, namely the area close to the freight station of neighboring Bruck an der Mur. Since “Mürzstub'n Feiel” covers part of the ground floor of an inconspicuous residential building it could easily be overlooked if there were not its outside Seating area.
The interior is in stark contrast to the hideous location: It looks elegantly and modern, though it is not brand new. The nice decoration of the tables contributed to a pleasant atmosphere. Service was speedy, professional and friendly, yet unobtrusive. The large-sized permanent menu was of no frills design, which, however, brought the advantage of good readability. More importantly, it revealed that prices were a bargain for a restaurant of this standing.
The menu comprised not only a wide variety of meat dishes, but also special sections such as whole food dishes, salads as main courses and small, unpretentious dishes of the regional cuisine. This is one of the rare restaurants in the region where vegetarians find an adequate number of dishes to choose from. In addition to Styrian and Austrian specialties international cuisine was also well represented on the menu.
The permanent menu was supplemented by a menu of seasonal dishes. The latter focused on dishes containing wild garlic leaves, some of which also constituted the dishes of the day written on the chalkboards at the entrance. Although we had ordered four different dishes they were served together after only a short waiting time.
Portion sizes ranged from normal to large. While everything was arranged pleasing to the eye and tasted fine, the hot vegetable platter deserves special mention. It was made up of about a dozen different kinds of vegetables, none of which were too hard or too soft. In contrast to a habit encountered in many restaurants, the vegetables were not dripping with butter. On top of that they tasted delicious.
Apart from the mediocre setting, for which the restaurant is not to blame, we found no reason for criticism. This is a refined restaurant that really provides excellent value for money.

“Gasthof Tödtling” is located in the north of Kapfenberg, a few kilometers off the center of town, in the municipal district of Hafendorf. The large building next to a roundabout of a main street can hardly be overlooked. This restaurant is renowned for its home-made ice-cream. Therefore, in summer its ice-cream parlor attracts huge crowds.
When I arrived to have lunch here on a fairly warm spring day, I only had a short look at the quite attractive interior of “Gasthof Tödtling”, but decided to take a seat outside at its small Terrace that extends on either side of the main entrance. This outside Seating turned out to be pleasantly airy, but was not separated at all from the close roundabout and therefore quite noisy. This spoiled the atmosphere somewhat.
In addition to the permanent menu that comprises the dishes of Austrian and international cuisine one finds in most restaurants of this region, there was also a fairly comprehensive menu of the day (which supposedly was rather a menu of the season). Some dishes listed on the latter were particularly advertised on the chalkboards at the entrance.
Given that I had chosen one of the dishes of the day and that the place was not crowded, the waiting time was not as short as expected, but not overly long either. The dish I had ordered consisted of pasta with a filling based on wild garlic nicely arranged around a heap of salad on an orange colored (!) plate. The dish tasted quite fine, but was perhaps a little more pleasing for the eye than for the palate because I would have liked the aroma of the wild garlic to be more pronounced. Nonetheless, I appreciated the well seasoned salad.
The portion was of ordinary size and the price was reasonable and corresponded to the level one expects for a restaurant of this kind in Kapfenberg. Since service was also correct I found my lunch at “Gasthof Tödtling” absolutely okay.

Although this restaurant is named “Pizzeria Trattoria San Marco” it is not a genuine Italian restaurant, i.e. a restaurant run by native Italians. Actually, its proprietors originate from the Balkans as can be gathered from the restaurant's website. But this should not make any difference provided the kitchen staff is really familiar with Italian cuisine. The focus of the menu is on pasta and pizza, not on more exceptional Italian dishes, let alone the cuisine of certain Italian regions.
When I arrived there for a very late lunch on a rainy working day I was surprised for two reasons. First, while the pedestrian precinct where “San Marco” is situated was deserted, the restaurant was half full. This place seems to be popular among locals. Second, seeing its plain outside one would not expect such a large and cozy restaurant. The interior is rustic, features some bare brick walls and large wooden girders. The furniture is also made of wood. From the first moment I felt comfortable there. But this comfort was somewhat spoiled later when the separation of the smokers and the non-smokers areas turned out to be insufficient. Dependent on whether the entrance and/or the back door were open the smell and smoke of cigarettes was sucked from time to time into the non-smokers area.
Since it was already late for having lunch I chose a pizza in the hope that it would be prepared rapidly. Indeed, a sizeable pizza was served after only a fairly short waiting time. Service was swift, but indifferent and not particularly friendly. My mild and polite criticism at the end that the pizza, although on the whole quite good, suffered from too much salt in its dough (or at least in parts of it) was simply ignored by the waiter.
Prices were quite low in view of the nice ambiance. All in all, a restaurant of mainstream Italian cuisine whose principal attraction, however, seems to be its marvelous décor.

A friend took us here and we were enchanted right away. Okay the proprietor is eccentric, but I loved it. The food and service were some of the best we've ever had. I ordered the Tafelspitz "Alt Wien", which is how they prepared it in the old days. The meat was tender and juicy and the whole meal made me happy. My friends both had the Schnitzel Parade and reported that they were impressed. The restaurant itself is beautifully furnished and full of atmosphere.
Next time I'm in Austria, and there WILL be a next time, I will make a point of coming here again.

“Gasthaus Hiaslwirt” is situated in a main street, but is so inconspicuous that it could easily be overlooked if there were not its yellow name-plate on the façade. It is obvious from the outset that this place does not aspire to be a high-class restaurant. It rather seems to be a meeting place for inhabitants of the surrounding apartment blocks. I had lunch there on a very hot day and was seated in a wooden pavilion in the backyard.
On the one hand the atmosphere was not great. The chairs were not all of the same kind, the table-cloth was stained and the view through the open kitchen door was not pleasant. From time to time the wind blew kitchen smell through the outside Seating area. On the other hand this turned out to be an advantageous spot on a hot day because it was airy and the heat was not intense there. Moreover, one is well protected from the traffic noise of the very busy street and would therefore hardly believe that this street is only a few meters away.
One may choose between the menu of the day and the dishes of the unpretentiously styled, but quite comprehensive permanent menu. The latter focuses on Austrian cuisine and is dominated by breaded meat dishes. They seem to be the specialty in “Gasthaus Hiaslwirt”.
The waitress may perhaps not have acted professionally in every respect, but she excelled in being friendly and swift. Portions were huge, as became also evident from the surrounding tables. Of course, my dish was not nicely decorated, but it consisted mostly of fresh ingredients rather than preserves and its taste was quite alright. A bit astonishing was the fact that the mineral water ordered was not even soda water, but tasted like tap water. Normally, in Austria “mineral water” is tacitly assumed to be carbonated if it is not specified further. Nonetheless, in view of the low prices “Gasthaus Hiaslwirt” offers good value for money if one takes all aspects into account.
