The Magpies Restaurant with Rooms is over two hundred years old and converted from three cottages. They also provide afternoon tea.'The Magpies' is situated on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds in the old market town of Horncastle which is also famous for its antique shops.Lunch: Wed to Fri and SunDinner:Wed to Sun Aternoon tea: Wed to Sun The restaurant is open for Christmas Day and New Year.Closed Monday & Tuesday
Myself and two friends went for afternoon tea, and my food needed to be gluten free. The food was excellent, plenty to eat, the service was excellent, but the restaurant was completely except for us!! My disappointment was the attitude of the manageress. We were charged £11.95 each despite the website stating it was £9.95! We paid the £11.95 because it was worth it, but the mabageress just said sorry the website is out of date. I stated that they should be charging what is advertised. But to no avail, the manageress was not budging!! She said she would change the website, to date the prices are still incorrect!!

We visited in a Saturday lunch time and the experience was brilliant. We had two young children with us and they also loved the lunch. The children’s menu is excellent and freshly made. The menu is superb and uses the best local ingredients.
The service from the staff is simply brilliant. This is a proper proper pub.

Nestled in the heart of Crowders Garden Centre, our cafe is the perfect place to stop and refresh. Select from mouth watering freshly baked cakes and scones, freshly brewed barrista style coffees and teas, and a great menu of lunches and ligh bites. Choose from our bistro style tables, soft Seating sofa area, or perhaps a sunny rest in our conservatory overlooking the Garden Centre. We pride ourselves on our home made, locally sourced food, relaxed friendly ambience, and our happy regulars! We look forward to seeing you soon.
I hadn't been to Botts for a while as it had got a bit "samey" but I was told that they had made some changes, so I gave them another try. I was very impressed. For a start they have got rid of those silly wooden spoons (that always fell down) with the order number on, and put numbers on the tables.
The daily "Specials" are much more "special" with a veggie soup and two veggie main meals that are a bit different. I had stuffed red peppers with roasted new potatoes - very tasty !.
They also now have a lady who comes around and asks if everything is OK with your meal - nice touch, that's good Customer Service, Botts !
Would definitely recommend.

Really sorry to say that I was very ill after eating at Shakesbys. I’ve been here before, the menu is very often the same, the only dish that was different to my last visit months ago was the chicken. Unfortunately after around 4 hours, I ended up being sick and as I was the only one to eat the chicken, I was the only one who was sick.
Certainly won’t be returning after this experience! If you can’t get chicken right, don’t serve it.

The Old Stables Coffee house offers fine bistro style dining in a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere. We believe in celebrating Lincolnshire's finest food and go to great lengths to source and select a variety of different ingredients to our seasonally changing menu. With an Al Fresco Terrace and Drinks licence we really do offer you the chance to sit back and..Relax, Refresh and Revive.
We sneaked off Horncastle Market Place down the little lane to the Old Stables Coffee Shop and we were given a very friendly welcome and ordered a delicious hot chocolate and Americano coffee before being directed to our table near the main window. The coffees were soon served (together with a mini-biscuit) and we enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere before other 'punters' began filling the place.
We were also delighted to be offered a free taste of an iced apricot pastry which they hoped to add to their range of delicious cakes and goodies. The pastry tasted really great, as it was fruity and light! Thank you!
We will definitely return in future!

Have now visited three times once at Saturday lunch and twice for Sunday lunch. All meals have been very good. Fresh vegetables and proper roast potatoes (not deep fried) gravy comes separate so have as much or little as you want. Friendly staff and reasonable priced will definitely be going back.

We visited mantles last weeekend, went downstairs to their restaurant. because i am a small eater I ordered small fish and chips, my partner had a normal one,,well. when the food came i couldnt believe my eyes, Ive never seen such a SMALL fish in my life. it was Miniscule..On paying the (not so cheap bill). I made a comment about the tiny fish, the Manager came to speak to me and immediately said, we cant reduce the bill... thats before i made my comment..? so be prepared to see the tiniest fish youve ever seen here..wast of time and money..anyway, they seemed more interested in the locals that were there..wont go again.. ps. think the chips were cooked the day before..no customer friendly treatment here....

Situated in the heart of the Lincolnshire Wolds, a short distance from the picturesque market town of Horncastle. The Durham Ox is a charming, welcoming country pub, with friendly staff. Our traditional Sunday lunch is always very popular as are our bar meals. A full restaurant menu is available in our restaurant, which is cooked to perfection by our chef and we always try to source our food as locally as we can. Booking is always advisable. Come and warm up next to our roaring log fire, have a pint or two in our 'RAF corner' or perhaps a bar meal in the 'cow shed', a glass of wine in our garden, or why not treat yourself to a fabulous meal in our delightful restaurant. Which ever you choose you are always guaranteed a very warm welcome. Did we mention we also have a registered caravan site? Why not bring your caravan or motorhome and stay with us a little longer. We look forward to seeing you soon.
Never been to this place despite living quite locally and being a bit of a foodie.
Let's get the negatives out of the way, the metalled car park was full and parking was in the overflow camping site close to the pub. The overflow car park had been chewed up but sand had been used to make it serviceable, so a tiny criticism.
The amount of vegetables served with the roast dinner was minimal for four adults. They just got away with it as roast potatoes and mashed potatoes were served on the plate when it came.
Now the good stuff... the roast beef was excellent, plenty of it and thickly cut, a proper Yorkshire pudding, and the gravy was great roasties and mash were good and well seasoned. The gravy was fab and a extra jug of the delightful mixture was provided without needing to be asked. Condiments were generous and quickly provided
The welcome was extremely warm, the beer well kept, the open fires well stoked.
Would return in a heartbeat, but would love a more generous portion of vegetables but l am being really picky.......

Visited for a function. Nice function room- if a little sqashed. I had the vegetarian option, which was really poor- mushroom stroganoff, which was lacking in taste and just seemed like an after thought. I think the meat eates were ok. The room layout meant that there wasn't much room to move. Would also have been nice to have had the function bar open, rather than having to go down to the main bar all of the time.
