Harbin DongFang JiaoZi Wang (ZhongYang Main Street)

This was recommended a must try in Harbin. They are everywhere known as “Orient King of Dumplings “ in English. First, they are mostly Mandarin speaking waiters/waitress. But good thing is that menu has pictures. Go for the dumplings supposedly famous. I have eaten good and great dumplings across Asia, I would say mediocre. The dumpling skins are a little thick, when you take a bite at a great dumplings, the juice in it will oozes out giving you a great sensation of the ingredients wrap inside, but I can’t find or taste it.
I did go for some local specialities, not my type. Generally, food a tad oily and salty. Nevertheless, a check on my bucket list. Again, please note this is “fast food”, not a restaurant selling dumplings so you need to check your expectations.

Just like McDonald's in just about anywhere else ... but nevertheless, a good place to pop in out of the cold for a bit ... Lots of room inside, and very warm, so a big plus there!!

You have to wait for a table but it's worth it. With an english it makes easier to order, and the pipa duck is great. Try to get a table as far as away from the door as possible if like your to stay warm .

Golden Hans (Guo Zhan)

Reviewed By Elilyssar - Bundaberg, Australia

We went to Golden Hans for lunch. We didn't have high expectations, but it turned out great. The hall is huge and decorated in an intense German beer hall style. The room is a bit dark, but not crowded. You buy your ticket before you enter the hall. Food is pretty cheap - a ticket (59 yuan) gets you a large variety of carved meats brought to you at your table by boys wearing German style outfits. More than I could eat - I declined some offers towards the end. You also have access to a massive buffet. The buffet has freshly cooked pizzas, many Chinese style dishes, a salad bar, Chinese style dumplings, Deserts (cakes and egg tarts), coffee, soft drinks and fruit juices etc.
I have heard that Golden Hans includes all you can drink beer at lunch time. Maybe this is true, but we had to pay. Our Mandarin was not good enough to ask. Some tables had small or 1L steins of beer, and some tables had tall glass dispensers holding 2-3 litres. We ordered large beers, and through possible misunderstanding got one of the dispensers that cost 20 yuan. Perhaps if we had ordered just a stein it would have been free? It was a pretty fun place to go, cheap and quick and easy.

The pancakes were so thin, the meat and veg fillings were delicious, and we had lots of fun rolling our pancakes, laughing at each other for puttimg too much filling in and breaking the skins.
One of the best meals we've had since arriving in harbin!! Highly recommended, and good value too.

DongFang JiaoZi Wang (ShangZhi Main Street)

Reviewed By dim-sum-mum - Hong Kong, China

We ate at 81 Walking/Pedestrian Street King of Oriental Dumplings the other night. The staff was very happy to see us and informed us there was an "English Menu" which turned out to be a Russian menu!
There is a screen flashing menu highlights and we had no problems ordering - mostly hits and a couple of misses. The Vegetarian dumplings had fish in them and were not popular with the kids, but they loved the boiled pork dumplings and everyone devoured the broccoli. The clear soups were also fantastic and warming.
The total for 11 people including two beers was 450RMB, we thought that was a good deal, and the staff were as accommodating as they could be. The restaurant is busy and getting the waitstaff's attention sometimes took a bit, but it wasn't because they were ignoring you, it was because this is a popular busy restaurant. We would definitely go back if we had been in Harbin for longer.

MaoMao XunRou DaBing

Reviewed By Jedai79 - Singapore

We patronised Maomao (毛毛熏肉大饼)twice on 12 & 13 May 2017. Delicious Dongbei food! 30 years in business (三十年老字号). Popular with the locals. The two times when we were there, we saw no tourists.
~How to get there?~
56, DaAn Street 大安街, off Zhongyang Main Street (中央大街). If you are staying at ibis (Zhaolin Street outlet) like us, walk out of the hotel, turn left, then turn left almost immediately again. Head straight towards Zhongyang Main Street. Once at Zhongyang Main Street, get onto the first side street on your left, opposite you, that's DaAn Street. Walk past at least 10-15 shoplets/eateries and you will see Maomao on your left. Check GPS for more details.
~The Food~
First meal we had (12 May) :
1. 熏肉 Xun Rou - Smoked meat
2. 大饼 Da Bing - Pancakes with "pockets" (For Singaporeans: it is like a thicker version of roti prata)
3. 三鲜茄盒 San Xian Qie He - Brinjal stuffed with meat and fried together with tiny prawns, small sea cucumbers, almost microscopic cuttlefish (it was like 1/10 of the size of cuttlefish we see in our dishes in Singapore's Chinese restaurants). Nonetheless, extremely tasty!
4. You must order your sweet (black in colour) sauce and onions. The sweet sauce was like that used for Beijing Duck/Peking Duck (北京鸭)One set is enough for 2 pax.
5. Dongbei porridge (complimentary), totally bland but healthy. It complemented the well-seasoned dishes.
Total cost ¥76
Second meal we had (13 May) :-
1. 熏肉 Xun Rou - Smoked meat
2. 大饼 Da Bing - Pancakes with "pockets"
3. 拉皮 is made from 淀粉 according to waitress. We checked for English translation of 淀粉and it's starch. It's like Japanese cold noodles except that the noodles are made of starch and they use 麻油(sesame oil) and 麻 to marinate it. Strips of cucumber, carrot and coriander are added. My partner liked it. I was ok with it, didn't fancy it in particular.
4. 西芹炒虾 Celery fried with prawns. Both celery & prawns were very fresh!
5. Sauce & Onions
6. Free bland porridge.
Total cost ¥88

Service:- For the price we paid, service was good. Sweets were provided at the cashier. Need to walk to cashier to pay.
P/S To digress: please do not get conned by the Russians performing on their accordion and violin at Modern Coffee and Restaurant's (reviewed under Modern Hotel) at 89 Zhongyang Main Street (中央大街) verandah and glass windows. We knew it was going to be expensive. We have never tried western food in China, so we wanted to try it. Paid ¥350 for some bad dishes (some were good though) and service. When one pays ¥350 for a meal for two vs ¥76 which is 4x, of course one will expect a higher level of service and it was not only not any better, it was not as good. Please read our review.
