This restaurant was recommended by our interpreter, Irina. She said the food was really good and the menu was translated into English. She was right - the food WAS good. We found the menu descriptions to be understated, but when the food arrived it was beautifully presented and delicious. The pea soup comes in a bread bowl (photo attached). The staff speak very little English, so use the Google Translate app if you need to.
The ambiance of the restaurant gives you the feeling like you've stepped into somebody's grandmother's living room. Lots of mis-matched antique chairs, tables and cabinets, beautiful China sets, old photos on the walls....it was a very homey feeling. We really enjoyed our dinner here.

Ukrainian restaurant, not far from the Gorkovskaya metrostation. Maybe not that easy to spot, but truly a great place to have dinner or lunch. Ukrainian food is somewhat different from Russian, so worth checking it out. The borsch - soup was really a top notch, best I´ve eaten. Staff was really polite and nice, and compliment vodkas on the house came before the maincourse and after dessert.. 5/5, please do go :)

Encouraged by many positive reviews decided to go for early dinner.
Generally quality of food was disappointing - I have tried gazpacho which was far away from soups I have tried before. Chicken was ok hit nothing special.
Service - excellent, really trying their best.
If you do not expect too much from food and don't want to pay a lot of money this place might be worth visiting.

Been twice, unless my conversion rate deceives me the steaks are 40 pounds to 80 pounds, is that right, 1400 - 3000 roubles as I recall,
The Rib eye I had was the fattiest piece of rubbish I had ever eaten. If I was paying I would have thrown it back.
The rest is pretty good though. Good service, good food, wine range . The desserts were fabulous.

Franky Bar is a genuine embodiment of American culture, aesthetics and lifestyle as they were in the first half of the XXth century. Not much time has passed since Prohibition was revealed and the Golden Age of cocktails in America began. What is very distinguishing about this place is its atmosphere which comes directly from the surroundings. Being located in the heart of the city, Franky Bar is still hidden at a rather exclusive spot. Aromas of coffee, Sinatra's sweet voice, twilight...This is something that fills the atmosphere here. In our bar card you'll find pure old-school recipes as well as many original cocktail specials. For those who love experiments we offer just to tell the barmen which beverage to choose as a cocktail basic part. Though if it's too hard to choose, you won't be asked too many questions. Some polished movements and you get the cocktail which reads your mood and matches the time. Franky Bar is a place where a life well savoured with classic cocktails presents us with such a unique gift as luxurious rest filled with meaning.
Franky is just a few meters from the beginning of Bolshaya Pokrovka street (the uphill end, near Gorky Square) and is one of the two very good cocktail bars in Nizhny, the other being the Beriozka bar just a few meters around the corner from Franky. Which you prefer depends upon the mood you want.
Franky is an upscale, calm place with decor like a fine club. Oil painting portraits of famous cocktail culture personalities like Hemingway and Sinatra are on the walls. It's a great place for conversation. Pavel, the former head barman from Beriozka now can be counted up on to mix the best Manhattans in Nizhny at Franky. For a truly special Manhattan, choose the version using Utah's High West Double Rye whiskey.
I've never eaten here so I can't comment on the food, but it is a perfect place for grown ups to visit on a classy date. Beriozka is great if you want more of a night club scene with nonstop music but for conversation and great, expertly-made cocktails without all the ruckus in the background this is the place.

Mitrich is a restaurant with extraordinary atmosphere that is perfectly suited for business meetings or dinner with family or friends. The restaurant "MITRICH STEAKHOUSE" is a place that differs from other institutions in our city created by the project "Food and Culture" in the past. The main feature of the restaurant "Mitrich Steakhouse" is a steak of marbled beef.
All I want to say is thanks to all team of Mitrich! Atmosphere, service, food everything was excellent! Blu mussles were amazing, chef is great! Thank you for birthday surprise with a candle in my cake )

Very conveniently located on the main drag, we were very glad of somewhere to refuel at a reasonable price after all (or what felt like all) of Nizhniy's many hills and staircases.
The large chalkboard behind the bar detailing what's on offer is a bit bewildering at first glance; it vaguely resembles a the family tree of some long-forgotten dynasty or the table for the knock-out stages of a football or rugby tournament. In actual fact it is straightforward enough. At the time we visited, there was the choice of five different kinds of noodle, or you can opt for the rice, then there's difference meats or vegetables, then different kinds of sauces. Basically, it's mix-and-match as you see fit. Alternatively, there's a variety of soups.
Can't actually remember what I had at this point, but I do recall portions being very generous. As one would hope and expect, chopsticks are available for those who want them, likewise knives and forks for those who don't.
As other reviewers have commented, there's definitely a hipster feel. If Wes Anderson had decided to open a noodle bar somewhere in the middle of Russia, it might look something like this. The decor may not be to everyone's taste, but it's clear that someone put a good time and thought into it, and was also clearly having fun!

The only problem with this place is that its interior kind of doesn't correspond with the food it serves. The food's excellent, very authentic, but the decor reminds me more of a bar or coffeeshop than a restaurant. Too casual for the price tag? Anyway delicious food, not too much wait, good beer.

It's probably the best place in Minnie Novgorod. The coffee is really good and they offer different methods of making it starting from Turkish way to Siphon. Interior is hipster style, but looks like designers worked well on it. Service is nice, for every cup of coffee they also serve you with a lovely biscuit.
