Gengenbach is a town in the district of Ortenau, Baden-Württemberg, Germany and a popular tourist destination on the western edge of the Black Forest with about 11,000 inhabitants. Gengenbach is well known for its traditional Alemanic "fasnacht", ("Fasend"), a kind of historically influenced celebration of carnival, where tradition is followed, from wearing costumes with carved wooden masks to clapping with a "Ratsche" (a traditional-classic wooden "sound-producing" toy). Gengenbach also boasts a picturesque, traditional, medieval town centre ("Altstadt"). The traditional town Gengenbach is the proud owner of the world's biggest advent calendar. The 24 windows of the 18th century town hall represent the 24 "windows" of an Advent calendar. The town also hosts a department of The Graduate School of Offenburg University of Applied Sciences, part of the University of Applied Sciences Offenburg. The nearest cities in the region are Freiburg, Karlsruhe, Baden-Baden and Strasbourg/France. Gengenbach is twinned with the town of Obernai, Alsace, France.

We ended up here by default when hunger struck early and our initial choice was closed. It worked out perfectly!
The Mr and I were able to enjoy two regional specialities. I had the Black Forest ham on bread and he had sausages. We added a side order of fried potatoes. All three were delicious. The service was efficient and kind. We particularly appreciated the free WiFi. The first we had found in a restaurant in Gengenbach. The interiors were beautiful. I highly recommend Frei Steinkellerhaus!

This is a nice restaurant with pretty good German food. Outdoor section has several very shady trees giving the restaurant a very summary atmosphere.
When I went there most of the tables outside were occupied and the service was pretty slow. However, the server was extremely nice and helpful.
I had wild meat (not sure which animal that was) and spaetzle that came with a salad. I also had a glass of Riesling and espresso. The bill came to be 20 Euros, which I thought was pretty fair.
I enjoyed my lunch at this restaurant in the beautiful city of Gengenbach.

An excellent restaurant serving traditional dishes in cosy rustic surroundings. We had stopped for a drink earlier in the day and the staff were friendly and the food being served looked good so we decided to come back for an evening meal. It was very busy with most tables taken but the waitress was able to seat us at a large wooden table with the carved wooden head that is the restaurant centrepiece that we shared with other diners. It was good to exchange stories with other travellers and enjoy their company. We ordered from the speciality section of the menu and were not disappointed. We each had a pork dish, one with potato and sauce and the other with noodles and creamy mushroom sauce. Both were served in cast iron gratin dishes and were delicious. Even though the restaurant was busy, there was no rush and after finishing our meal, we ordered a glass of the local red wine that was recommended by a local man sitting at our table. The food was excellent and incredible value for money. Under 35 euros for our meals, beer and wine and all in very good company. Would definitely recommend.

We walked there with our two sons on a wet Sunday - the long way via Fussbach. What a find - the location is absolutely idyllic and the dining room really nice and cosy on a wet day. The food on offer was great traditional home made fayre - we had various flammenkuchen and also the hausplatte. The cream cheese on the platter was good enough for us to buy some to take away with us

We enjoyed a fantastic night in the Winzerstuble having a delicious meal accompanied by a few beers followed by both red and white local wines.
This restaurant had a fabulous atmosphere and reminded us of the type of restaurants normally found in ski resorts.
The food was excellent as was the wine and it was not particularly expensive.
We would thoroughly recommend this restaurant and would most definitely return.

This was for our 25th Wedding Anniversary dinner and we wanted a nice upscale restaurant with a pleasant atmosphere. Die Reichsstadt fit the bill. We sat in the patio on a beautiful warm summer night. The food was oustanding and the service was excellent. The restaurant was comparable to many upscale restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area where we live.

Found this restaurant in a back street just behind Die Reichsstadt when the latter restaurant was closed on our first night and it became our favourite!
The menu was very varied and extensive but above all it was plentiful and beautifully cooked. Service by delightful waitress Angelina was friendly and efficient, always with a smile and enough English to help us when needed.
The restaurant has many interesting pictures and lovely woodwork on the ceiling. Local wine is sensibly priced as is the food. By the way I had never tried it before but I developed a real liking for their snail soup!!

I can't give enough stars for this most most most lovely restaurant. So far THE BEST meal I had in my 2week long trip in Europe!
Food was AMAZING.
1 Salad with cabbage lettuce and bacon drizzled with vinegar and oil.
Sounds so basic but the entire presentation was just PERFECT. Every leaf was coated with vinegar and oil, and the bacon and croutons were perfect accompaniments to the leaves. YUM!!
2 fish fillet with roasted potatoes
OK first the potato. We're not talking some mashed potatoes or French fries. We're talking about a heap of sliced potatoes perfectly put together. Each slice was slightly crisp, and the center of each piece of soft and tender.
The fish was the highlight. Again, crisp on the edges but tender and moist in every bite. The sauce (I have no idea what sauce it was) went so, so well with the fish. It was a meal I was sad to finish!
3. Chocolate lava cake
Warm chocolate oozing out from the cake in every scoop. Sitting a top of circle of cream and accompanied by a vanilla ice cream ball. YUMMMAAAY.
Service
The proprietors were probably the nicest and friendliest I've met on this entire trip. They were so nice, sitting me down to explain the whole menu to me in English. WHOLE menu (they even got out their dictionary to help) ! I thought it was because I was the only guest and they were very free, but turned out they got very busy in no time and even then, they'd stop by without fail to ask how each course was, and if I needed help with anything. they were unhurried and the service was efficient. They were obviously up to their necks but they were still cheerful. What an amazing couple!
I highly highly recommend this place :)
