Essen began in the mid-9th century as home to a women's abbey, then during the Renaissance became an important coal mining town and later a major steel production center. The famed metal-working Krupp family opened their first foundry here in 1810. One of Essen's most interesting places is the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex, once the largest colliery in the world. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it attracts 800,000 visitors a year, often hosting art exhibitions and performances.

The entrance is a bit unpreposessing, but it hides a lovely German/Mallorcan restaurant - a real gem! We went on a really hot and steamy night, but despite the humidity the food more than hit the spot, the portions were most generous and there was an eclectic selection of gin as aperitif to start the meal off. The really high standard of food was matched by the very attentive waiting staff, who rectified an error with an order in a most professional manner. The wine list was extensive and there seemed to be something, both food and drink, to meet every taste.

Spacious, authentic brewery with regional and other German food staples (from Bratwurst to pork knickles etc.). Also beer garden in summer. Various events. Suitable for fun, family, business. Somewhat out of the way by car but convenient via S/U-Bahn.

A very nice and stylish atmosphere- not too stif for a star restaurant. Very good service experience and a wonderful and surprising selection of food. The evening was exceptionally great. If you want to spend 150-200€ per person for a Michelin star restaurant- that is defiantly the right place to go and worth the money. Thumbs up for a perfect dinner.

We visited Hannappel for dinner in November with a smaller group during a medical fair in Duesseldorf. The restaurant is located in the outskirts of Essen and therefore at least a 15 minute cab ride from the center of Essen. Despite being not to early only two other tables were occupied, which gave the evening a somewhat stiff atmosphere. The restaurant itself is in a older building but the dining room looked modern and contemporary. The menu is fairly limited and has a focus on regional products with a slightly modern and fancy touch. The quality and taste of of the amuse-gueule, starters and the main course was flawless. Despite the good taste and presentation we were not completely satisfied with our visit. Firstly the service strongly needs to be improved. Despite having three servers in an almost empty restaurant none of them really took care of us personally after we placed our orders. Nobody asked if we cared for more water or wanted a second bottle of wine, so we had to remind them a couple of times. Nobody was interested in recommending a bottle of wine and after I selected some Italian red and asked for alternatives very little to none came back from the server. Secondly the quantity of the main courses was fairly limited, so we would have left hungry if we had not ordered appetizers and dessert. Also a little awkward that the chef de cuisine showed up at the bar a couple of times and chatted with the servers but never came around to introduce himself or asked if we were pleased. All these are just some minor flaws and no big deal but I would like to see these improved since the work of the kitchen was excellent.

Very interesting place where you select into a bowl what is to be prepared on the hot plate with a sauce of your choice. Large selection of vegetables, tofu, noodles and meets and sea food available. Eat much as you can option available. Crocodile, kangaroo, ostrich, duck, beef, pork, Turkey, chicken meats to choose from. Very tasty, including good desert. As a starter soup and INSECTS available. Tried insects and were ok (crisps with sauce). Very friendly staff. Filly recommended.

This reputable steak restaurant is definitely worthwhile visiting. Nice selection of steak from Argentina, Ireland and the USA. I ordered the Rump Steak from Ireland and was quite impressed. Only negative is that all steaks are pan fried as opposed to grilled, but still very good.
The menu is an à la carte so no sides are included like choice of potato or grilled vegetables. The sides are all relatively generous and can easily be shared by 2 or even 3 people, depending how hungry you are.
Staff was very friendly and most had good English.

We enjoyed a nice dinner here. Fresh salads and cold mezze, fresh fish and lamb. Refined Turkish white wine. We did regret, though, that Turkish flavours seemed somewhat normalized on the whole. In addition, the price level is rather high. Nonetheless a commendable restaurant.

The place often is packed. And I don't get why.
The interior isn't exactly what you'd look for in a burger place.
Sitting outside you are next to a busy street.
The burgers are off the wall, but in a tastewise direction that I find unsuitable.
And, also on a non-packed night, it requires time, a lot of time, to get one.
And when it comes the meat isn't that good.
So why is this place packed? Obviously, for capacity, it can only serve a minority. A minority of people who want their burger, an American dish to begin with, to taste as Bavarian or Austrian or French as it gets. I just don't get it. But I don't have to, I won't go again.

We witnessed a scene of a very nervous bossy lady, who was probably in charge of running the place. When she arrived she started talking to the waitress in an inappropriate way pointing out mistakes of the staff from the previous shift which was neither nice to watch, nor necessarily nice to be listening to. Apart from that, burgers were delicious, but not a wow and we had to wait for them for quite long. The size of the little burger (120g) is rather small, so if you happen to be there, you better go for the 200 g option. Apparently, place is well known among young people and not overcrowded, but more less full most of the time, so I guess they have reached at least a part of their customers' target. They don't have beer glasses, although they serve beer. The place definitely has not earned my 2nd place among restaurants in Essen, they should try harder.
