Restaurant we planned to visit was closed so this was our next choice! Short menu but you know it is all lovely and fresh, lots of elements to each dish combining beautifully. Lots of veggies with main( at least 6 varieties!) - hurrah!! Always amazes me French markets full of seasonal produce but you don't get them with your dinner in a restaurant! Service perfect , nice amuse bouche, good choices of wines both local and other. All in all a lovely dinner. Thought really good value at 28€ 3 course set menu.

Auberge des Gabares

Reviewed By ChrisandJudy1000 - Cleveland, Australia

We went to Auberge des Gabares accepting that the owner was a 'character', but expected to get good quality food. What a shock we received.
The food could be most kindly described as basic home cooking and the owner seemed much more intent on his 'look at me' performance than on providing any kind of service to his customers.
On entering the restaurant and asking for a table for two, we were told in loud voice and with arms waiving, 'sit there'. No 'how would you like to sit here' or 'would this table be OK'. Just 'sit there' and he walks away.
No menu provided - there is no menu, just a blackboard at the bottom of the stairs leading up to the restaurant. Two choices for entree and two for main. No attempt to specify desert options. After 10 minutes, the owner came to the table to take our order. While he recognised that we spoke only a little French, he made no attempt to explain the dishes, or even to speak slowly. Best we could get was 'cannard or jambon, and ' boeff or cannard' for mains.
We selected the duck for entree and some time later the owner plonked two plates of melon and jambon of the table and walked away without saying a word. It actually tasted OK, but it is a hard dish to get wrong. Later came the mains - well, one dish of boiled beef in a grey gravy and one dish of over-cooked rice. Not a vegetable or salad item to be seen. Again plonked down without a word. Apparently we were supposed to share the rather small helpings. The dish tasted like what it was - boiled meat with a bit of flour to make the gravy.
Next came the cheese platter - no description, just help yourself, and then it was taken away. Desert saw a woman from the kitchen bring out an tray of dishes to pick from,
Paying the bill meant standing at the counter while the owner finished packing glasses into a dishwasher. Without washing or drying his hands, took the credit card and processed it without ever saying what the total amount was. I had to read the print-out to see. It was 55 euro for two 15 euro set meals and a bottle white wine.
We have enjoyed many great lunches and diners during our week at Cahors. With this one notable exception, the food has been very good to great and the service uniformly high. The Auberge des Gabares is a disgrace to the region. Why anyone would return to this place is a mystery - we certainly will not.

we ate dinner here which was a very affordable 21euro for a 3 course meal. The portions were enormous and delicious. My seafood hot pot was delicious. It is a small place so booking ahead is advisable although we were lucky to get a table without a prior booking.

Had the 20 euro menu here for dinner - foie gras, salmon stack for entrees, confit de canard for mains and creme brûlée for dessert. All excellent. Friendly service, chef comes out to check all guests are happy. Very small restaurant with just a few inside and outside tables, though there is a second floor.

This fabulous restaurant is beside the river Lot. It has outdoor and inside Seating. The service is extremely good. You must try the foie gras. It is served with a warm roll and some sort of fruit jam/chutney. I have never had anything so delicious. We also had the duck served with asparagus which was equally delicious.

Located a few Km outside of Cahors, this restaurant offers superb food in a delightful setting. The friendly and very professional service completes the package and, in our case, ensured that we had our most memorable evening in the Cahors / Lot valley region.
The restaurant is located in what appears to be a barn conversion - massive stone walls, log frames and stone floors. There are inside dining areas, but we choose to sit outside on a pleasantly cool evening, surrounded by quaint Gardens, through which the farm paddocks were visible.
The menu has two set options, with the ability to select a la carte from either. We chose the 30 euro option and had the choice of 2 entrees, 3 mains and 3 Deserts, in addition to the cheese platter. Each dish was a delight. Well cooked, beautifully presented, nicely flavoured and in generous proportions. If we had any criticism, it would be that the entree (cod cannelloni) had a sauce which, while delicious, was a little overpowering for the delicate cod filling. We can highly recommend the veal in tarragon jus which we had as our main dish.
The wine list is more than adequate, with a range of styles, regions and prices. Our very nice rose was under 25 euro.
The owner (for the past 16 years) is a charming woman who was very helpful and attentive to our needs. While her English is limited, her patience and good nature ensured we had no trouble understanding the menu options.
Overall, we had a thoroughly delightful evening. Great food in a great setting. Everything we came to the Lot valley to enjoy.

Ate here for dinner on the 26th September. This is a quaility act. None of the greasy gunk sauces that you get in many asian/chinese restaurants in provincial towns. Every dish we ate was superb (samousas/raviolis vapeur/crevettes champignons and poulet gingembre) - all cooked by parents of waiter. And all for euro 26.50. Outstanding value for money. Go now before they put their prices up!
