We ate at a few restaurants in Vila Viçosa, and this one became our favourite. The choice of meals was superb, the service first rate, and the prices very reasonable. It is not a large restaurant, but clearly enjoyed by the local Portuguese - which is always a good sign of an enjoyable experience. For our main course, we ate chicken kebabs with salad and vegetables, all of which was deliciously succulent and filling; over coffee, we were treated to a gratuitous glass of Medronho by the host.
All in all, the ambience of the restaurant, the fine food and very friendly helpful service, and the very reasonable prices make O Paco Ducal our number one recommendation of a dining experience in Vila Viçosa.

The best thing about this restaurant is the location in the middle of a park or green belt. The food is just average and 20% more than I paid for a great meal in a comparable restaurant. The wait staff was very polite and helpful but what came out of the kitchen did not match the service. Homemade potato chips were soggy.

A really excellent family run restaurant. The staff are extremely helpfull and friendly. The food is very tasty and there is an excellent choice of local wines (the house wine itself is extremely good and great value). We had a great chat with the owner and he was able to recommend many sites and activities to us.
Highly recommended both for the wonderful food and service.

They have a very large menu and the price/quality ratio was nice.
My wife had the arroz de marisco en the dish was very fresh and LARGE.
I had the costeleta de novilho and the meat was to large for the plate, and the quality was very good.
The service was also excellent, when we ordered the wine the waiter let us try several bottles so we could choose one, and at the end of the meal he put 4 bottles of local brandy and aguardente on the table to let us choose.

O Espalha Brasas apparently translates as the hothead/show-off/rowdy person – take your pick - and is about five kilometres from the centre of Borba in Alcaraviça. There is raised, covered wooden decking which affords views of rolling countryside, a bar area with a few tables, and sight of the open kitchen, and a lower dining area with space for a couple of dozen more diners. No menu was offered but the waitress told us, in Portuguese, what was available: three kinds of soup and various oven cooked main courses. While we waited for our ordered food we nibbled on bread, olives, fresh cheese and charcuterie. Tomato soup came with a hard poached egg in it and the rabbit was beautifully tender in a rich, lightly spiced sauce. Accompaniments were good game chips and a salad, the portions were large as is often the case in the Alentejo. Rustic cooking perhaps, but none the worse for it. The only slight disappointment was that my wife, who can eat neither onion nor garlic, was offered only fried pork slices. She would have liked more choice but didn't complain about the flavour of what was presented. We were both too full to sample any of the desserts so settled for coffee which came with small bottles of mint liqueur and aguardente. With a jug of local red wine and several sparkling waters the bill came to less than 30€. When next in Borba we will return and have been told that, with notice, Paula will cook the rabbit dish without onion or garlic so that we can share. Recommended.

A very friendly typical portuguese restaurant where local dishes are a speciality. Our Portuguese is rubbish but we were welcomed in English and the menu was explained in detail to us. I would recommend the traditional Migas and a bottle of local wine unless you're driving.
I would like to go bak there for dinner as I think it would be even better.

We had been walking around Borba quite a bit under a scorching sun and we were feeling a bit desperate when we found this small restaurant, possibly 200 meters (!) from where we parked our car in the big square in front of the Iglesia Matriz. We were treated like family members, people very curious about our whereabouts (we are Italians). Nice outside setting, with big umbrellas providing plenty of (badly needed) shadow. Very good, authentic portuguese food, a towering bitoque, and so many sardines grilled "live" across the street by someone who obviously did not mind having his fingers toasted for someone else's lunch. Fantastic salad. All in all there was plenty to eat for the four of us and still the check was very moderate.

On the way back to Lisbon from Merida, stopped for lunch in Borba. Couldn't find anywhere attractive on the main road so consulted TA and found this place was close to the main Adega. Despite having the map and address to put in the GPS, we couldn't see anything that looked like a restaurant, so had to ask a local, who pointed to an anonymous looking doorway up some steps in a row of houses. On looking through the glass door, we saw the name and a large representation of a woodsaw, confirming we were in the right place. Later we found out that if a restaurant had an external sign that could be read from 25 m. away then they had to pay a large additional fee on the licence. We wondered if this applied to the Adega which had letters nearly two meters high painted on the walls.
The dining room was like a front room of a house next to a small bar and till at the entrance. A few tables were occupied by locals. The owner was doing all the serving, and was quietly efficient though looking a little harassed.
The food on offer was standard Portuguese with generous size and freshly cooked. The local olives, crusty bread and a fine extra virgin olive oil from a local producer were all very good.
Having been in meat-loving Spain for the weekend we opted for grilled garoupa and salmon steaks although one of our party couldn't resist the grilled mixed meat which was mainly pork and chicken, but very generous portions. The chips and boiled vegetables were freshly prepared and hot, and it was a good cheap lunch. I won't hesitate to stop there next time I pass.

We had a perfect diner at Narcissus.
Like the hotel itself, the many taste explosions on one plate might be a bit over the top, but we enjoyed this true dining experience. Way more imaginative and creative than the Pousada.
The waitresses are friendly but very serious. Our waiter was entertaining and presented the food with some flair. With the ridiculous costumes they have to wear, this was the right attitude.
Expensive for the region, but reasonable for what is on offer or in comparison with same quality restaurants elsewhere in Europe.
The restaurant is also used for serving breakfast for the Marmoris hotel. Good selection and quality off food and drinks.

Staying in Pousada around the corner, we ventured in for evening meal Friday night. Not busy, 2-3 other tables. Lovely rustic chic decor, excellent wine selection. Food was plentiful and nice, mix-up with the starters, had pork and egg dish which was very tasty instead of the chiorizo I had ordered.
Lots of waiters flying about, seemed big disorganised although they were very pleasant. Steak was nice and good value, my wife's Dourada was 'muito bonita'.
On balance was good value and good food if not exceptional
