It's the only place for a decent dinner in town...
On an overnight stay in Balclutha in early October, our motel manager recommended Raj Indian Restaurant to us, so we walked into town and found ourselves having dinner there. It was an excellent recommendation - very friendly staff, and the food was very, very good. We started with a shared plate of onion bhaji's (huge portion - we couldn't finish them!), then moved on to saag chicken, lamb roganjosh, rice and garlic naan. We brought a bottle of wine with us, but ended up ordering one from the menu as the prices were so reasonable. The restaurant wasn't at all overly busy when we were there, but they do a booming take away business. Would definitely recommend!

One of the great things about touring in New Zealand is the great quality of the breakfasts. Fresh eggs, well-cooked bacon, good coffee etc.The Highway Diner in Balclutha is the exception that proves the rule. The array of deep fried foods under the glass counter is impressive; they may even be good. But bacon and eggs was a disaster. Eggs over-cooked; bacon watery, toast from wafer thin bread, coffee very poor. A great pity.
It has to be the worst place that I have ever got a take-a-way coffee. Burnt, over hot , and just a shocker.while the staff member was polite, there needs to be some basic training in coffee making!

Our huge shop specialises in NZ made merino and merino/possum garments plus also stocking a huge range of quality NZ souvenirs and gifts suitable as momentos of our beautiful country. Super helpful, experienced, and loyal staff ready to help. We offer a postage service to our customers without charging any packaging or handling fees. Our licensed cafe which is also open EVERY day of the year serves NZ style foods; breakfast, lunches, morning and afternoon teas plus NZ beers and wines. We offer a high quality service focusing on tour groups and locals alike.
It well worth waiting until you get just south of Balclutha. This is a large stop with lots of buses pulling in here. Guess that means fresh food

Tired looking venue. Very basic and no frills. Environment could do with a freshen up. Service was adequate. Meals similarly. It was generally honest food although the chowder was marginal for quantity of fish. Not a dining out experience but adequate when you are on the road or really hungry.

Intrigued by the sign on side on side of building advertising "Chinese, Fried Fish, and Burgers". Place is a Fried food mecca, with extensive fish selection, hot dogs (battered like corn dogs in America), spring rolls, and even delicacies like donuts. Family had beef burger, a cod burger (breaded fish sticks on buns with garnish), and chicken chow mein. Great value as lunch for 4 of us was under $40NZ. The fried food was excellent. Portions were huge. Great place to stop if you are rolling through Balclutha. Note, there is no Seating at the restaruant, take away only.

I have to confess I love pizza from Rusticus. Whilst they have a regular menus their gourmet pizza changes on a regular basis. They even have a desert pizza. The service is friendly and fast too.

Cafe 55 has been serving darn good coffee for over 10 years, a long with a large selection of slices, cakes and brunch options. Our menu changes seasonally to keep things interesting and we offer gluten free savoury and sweet options. We look forward to seeing you enjoying our cosy atmosphere next time you are in Balclutha. Cheers
Called in here on a big road trip definitely a highlight. All the food was delicious but the guac on the nachos was the best we've ever tasted. Doesnt look much from the street but the food and the service are top notch! The nachos are a new addition to the menu, glad it's a hit. Thank you and we will see you next time

Pleasant atmosphere and roomy so that you are not sitting close to other diners. Everything was fine and wouldn't take much to lift the decor, serving style and presentation of food to a very good standard. Perhaps to visit cafes outside the area could give some good ideas for this. Lots of potential for it to be a buzzing cafe.

Best Fish & Chips (flavour & value) in Balclutha. Come on in and get there fish of the day or Blue Cod and delicious crinkle cut chips. Take them down to the Clutha Bridge and sit in the river side reserve or drive down to Kaka Point Beach in the Catlins and have them on the beach. Great in all weathers, all year round.

Wouldn't take too much to rev up the environment - lil tired looking around, especially mirror/stone corner. Advised staff no toilet paper, curtly told they knew - hand drying paper towels thrown all over this area. Tables not cleared, seemed like good number of staff on duty & not that busy at this time, although obviously popular! Pastie sitting in warmer over long, pasta salad bland - but on a positive note these were the loveliest sandwiches. Very tasty filling of chicken, cranberry etc - generous fillings! I wish them well as could be a great stopover.
