part of Hotel Allamanda
Stopped here for lunch after a gruelling Madagascar trip before booking into the Grand Hotel. The restaurant was empty on arrival but nicely laid out for lunch. The choices of food was very good with a decent Specials Board too. Had a very nice lunch that didn’t break the bank on the veranda overlooking the sea and beach. The staff didn’t speak much English but we managed. By the time we’d left it was quite busy so that’s a good sign. The food was very nice and typical Malagasy. The place has a decent Wi-fi too which is not always the case here. We can definitely recommend this restaurant.

We tried several restaurants in Diego Suarez and La Rosticceria is by far the best one.
Being Italian we truly enjoyed this real Italian restaurant, especially after 2 weeks eating only rice and chicken or rice and zebu (quite good but a little bit recurring…)
- Delicious pasta (homemade pesto) and delicious fish (sicilian style). Homemade ice creams
- The owner is Italian, very nice and welcoming
- Small though suggestive location on Diego’s main street

We were looking forward to eating here after all the positive reviews. Unfortunately we did not have a good experience. We arrived at the restaurant and it was fairly busy, but nothing so as to overwhelm the owner or the serving staff. It took 20 minutes for them to even come to our table to take our drinks order. It took another half an hour for the drinks to arrive.
No-one would have bothered to take our food order had we not interrupted a waitress, to say we had decided what to order.
After waiting one hour for the food to arrive , one persons food in our group was served ,but no-one else! Eventually when we said could we cancel our orders and pay for our drinks the rest of the main courses arrived. In total we waited 1 and half hours for our food. The owner could see what was happening but not once did he come and apologise. The waitresses were terrible , they were rude and at times aggressive in manner, when questioned about why it was taking so long. From our point of view this seems to be the kind of place where the owner and his friends hang out at the bar, and the business of food/ service etc is secondary to them all having fun. When our food eventually arrived it was nice , but by then we were totally put off the place.
If like me you may read this review and compare it to all the positives and decide we were just a fussy group, I can assure we were not and this a genuine review of this restaurant. When we spoke to other locals ( this is my husbands home town), they all said they had similar experiences and had we told them of our intention to go to this restaurant would have advised us to go elsewhere.
I would not recommend this restaurant.

We thought about eating here one night whist staying in the town but as it was empty decided to give it a miss. However on another night it was still empty but decided to give it a try anyway. We were glad we did and the food and service were really pretty good and we couldn't understand why it was so quiet. The price is good with mains coming in at around a fiver.

This became our choice place for lunch whilst visiting Ankarana as it is just outside the park gate.
The served lovely local food (Zebu steaks, fish etc.) on all occations and did some great vegetarian food for my vegy companions.
On one day when we did a long hike in the park our guide arranged for them to bring a huge picknick lunch out to the middle of the park (we paid the Porters AR20,000 - about 3 Euros - on top of the food cost).
It looks increadably basic at first glance but they can serve a cold beer no problem.

Diego has quite a few options for pizza, but recently opened Oh! La! La! Pizza is the best pizza we've had yet. They've got a big menu with tons of options for different pizza types, including many toppings and combinations I haven't seen anywhere else in Madagascar yet (and great combinations too, not simply novel). Each pizza can be purchased in either medium or large size. I'd say a medium is usually enough to satisfy one person and a large usually enough to satisfy two, if you don't have a huge appetite. Their pizza prices are average for the area, and a few of the options are cheaper than average. They're all still cheaper than La Gastro (the much lower-quality Madagascar chain pizza restaurant). I can't recommend any one pizza because so far I've loved all of them a lot, but the "Lune de Miel" is an interesting and delicious combination of creamy, salty, and sweet. The 4 cheese pizza also uses some great high quality imported cheeses, and the 4 seasons pizza is one of those where each section of the pizza has a different set of topics (great for trying a variety). But seriously they all taste great.
They have several appetizer choices (the basil, mozzarella, tomato salad is good - we enjoy it with olive oil and bread, but you sometimes have to request the oil and bread in addition). They also have a couple non-pizza choices, like lasagna and pasta, but we haven't tried them yet. They also have tons of options on drinks, some well-priced, and some a bit expensive. Their milkshakes really are good compared to what's typically offered in the area. They also have several desserts that are excellent and well-priced... definitely try the "apple pie" ("tarte de pomme") - it's way better than a typical apple pie - excellent!
The atmosphere is somewhat non-existent, as it's simply road-side Seating under an awning. But at least it's not an especially busy road, so there's not a ton of traffic to bother you. The clientele are usually a 50/50 mix between Malagasy and foreigners.
Oh, and they do have Delivery options, as well as a buy 5 get one free pizza (delivery only) - but we haven't tried their Delivery yet so we can't comment on the service.

We went for dinner here during our stay in Diego. Very pleasant environment, on a balcony overlooking the Rue Colbert, the main colonial road in the town. Good quality pizza, pleasant staff. Very good overall.

We went here twice in the last month, once for lunch and once for dinner. The food is delicious, the setting of the restaurant is beautiful and the staff is very friendly! Also the little bar area at the pool is very nice: cocktails are great! We will definitely go here far more often the rest of the time we are in Diego.
